  1. Gope Boards

Refimprove date December 2007 Orphan date December 2007 Gope Boards are wooden ritual objects made in the Papuan Gulf of New Guinea . They represent spirits which can protect clans from sickness, evil spirits, and death. Small unnamed gope boards are often given to uninitiated boys, and a full size board is made by the uncle of a boy for his initiation ceremony. Also, warriors are awarded gope boards for each act of bravery they perform in battle often made out of the enemies canoe . These gope boards vary in size, but can be up to six feet long and have a consistent elliptical shape. They are carved in relief and then painted with lime white and red ochre and other native paints. Most gope boards have a similar style and depict the face of an ancestral spirit. Gope boards are also used in raids on other clans and headhunting missions. They are consulted as to which enemy to attack, and the spirits contained in the boards are thought to go ahead of the warriors to sap the enemies of their strength. They are also used to display skulls won in battle. 1. Community Boards

See also Community Board disambiguation Community Boards is a community based mediation program, established in 1976, in San Francisco , California , USA . The program utilizes volunteer s from the neighbourhood s of the city, who work with people involved in disagreements toward the end of resolving the dispute, repairing the relationship, and healing or preventing rifts in the community. The Community Boards program promotes a model of mediation that emphasizes the collective involvement of members of the community, recruiting mediators who are representative of their neighbourhoods with direct awareness of local needs and concerns. The program utilizes a form of case management in which case developers make in person contact with potential parties in order to encourage participation. Once the parties involved have consented to participate, they are assisted by a panel usually 3 of mediators. The program is among the most distant approach to formal legal process among the various models of community mediation. The most dramatic example of this viewpoint is the contention by the program s mediators that any agreement reached should be enforceable only by the good will and voluntary compliance of the parties. Proponents have asserted that the program s impact is much broader than the resolution of individual disputes reaching into issues of tolerance, acceptance and social justice. Community Boards has also been active in the promotion of K 12 school based peer mediation programs since 1982. 1. School boards in Scotland

Unreferenced date August 2007 School Boards in Scotland were involved in determining the overall policies, objectives and ethos at the school. Boards have a special duty to promote good relationships between the school, its parents and the community and also form a channel for the flow of information between these groups. School Boards were introduced in 1988 as part of the Government s policy of encouraging parental involvement in schools. They comprise parent, teacher and co opted members, with parents in the majority. Co opted members may be drawn from local business or the community. They were abolished by the Scottish School Act 2006 introduced to the Scottish Parliament on 28 September 2005, which would see them replaced by a two tier system of Parent Forums and Parent Councils. They were established by the School Boards Act 1988 , which mandated that they be set up in education authority schools in Scotland. Boards consist of elected parent and staff members and other members co opted by the elected members. Board members hold office for four years, with half the parent places coming up for election every two years. The initial round of elections to school boards was held in 1989 1990, with parental elections biennially thereafter. The 1988 Act provided for elections for school boards to be held in all schools except for the very few schools whose roll is so small that there are insufficient parents to form a school board. Schools in which elections are required to be held are referred to as eligible schools . School boards, the size and composition of which is laid down in the School Board Regulations 1989 , can only be established when sufficient parent members are elected through contested or uncontested regular election s, or by elections .
