Orphan date July 2009 Unreferenced date July 2009 File Pphillips text.jpg thumb Paul Phillips Paul Phillips 1959 2007 was one of Ireland s most popular and respected bodhr n players and teachers, immersed in the drum as an art form and in particular in the development and promotion of the style of play known as top end . He shared stages at various times with Mary Bergin , Lunasa , Michael McGoldrick , Se n Ryan Irish fiddler Sean Ryan , Gerry O Connor , Steve Cooney , Seamus Tansey and more. He was a regular member of Darragh Folk and Reely Jiggin. Phillips taught and toured widely across Europe, the United States and even as far afield as Timbuktu in the Sahara in 2006, bringing the drum to ever wider audiences. He was an experienced teacher and Comhaltas adjudicator and taught at many of the main summer schools in Ireland. Phillips died suddenly on 16 September 2007. He had been playing music in the company of friends and was returning home when he had a heart attack. Style and teaching Phillips was a proponent of the top end style of bodhran playing and recognised in his field as an innovator. As a teacher he had a focus on the young players and along with others such as Junior Davey and John Joe Kelly is credited with having been responsible for a new breed of contemporary bodhran playing. Unreferenced date September 2009 Back of the Moon is a Scottish people Scottish Band music musical group which plays both new and Scottish traditional music Scottish traditional tunes and songs cast in modern sounding arrangements. Since forming in 2000, the band have toured annually throughout the UK , Canada , USA and eight different Europe an Countries. Back of the Moon create an acoustic sound through a front line of Scottish border pipes and fiddle, a pairing of low whistle and flute, and their guitar piano rhythm combo. They are at times augmented by bodhran and Cape Breton Stepdancing, and three part vocal harmonies in their Scottish songs in which each singer takes the lead. 2005 saw them win Best Folk Band at the Scots Trad Music Awards , having received Best Up and Coming Act at the awards back in 2003 and Best Celtic Group at Festival Interceltique de Lorient 2003. Notability date August 2009 Four Men and a Dog is an Ireland Irish traditional band that emerged in 1990 during the Belfast Folk Festival. The band plays Irish traditional music with a mixture of different other genres, including rock, jazz, blues, bluegrass, swing, salsa, polka and even rap. They originally had their name because of former singer Mick Daly s nick The Black Dog . Mick is now replaced with Kevin Doherty. They met the famous group The Band in 1994, and recorded their album Doctor A s Secret Remedies at Levon Helm Levon Helm s studio in Woodstock, NY, with musical guests Garth Hudson and Randy Ciarlante . They were part of Stripey Jumper street theatre, who hold The World Record for Spoon Playing, as set down in The Guinness Book of World Records . The Band generally played festivals in the summer months and also a few specials during the winter. They were a Banjo, Bass & Guitar driven outfit, with stomp sticks, bodhran and tambourine accompaniment not forgetting the 6 vocalists. One of the main Banjo Billy strengths was their stage show, which had a heavy audience participation feel to it.
