The first light was erected in 1853 and consisted of a stone tower with a keeper s dwelling adjacent to it. It was ostensibly equipped with a first order fresnel lens , though a report in 1870 stated that it had been assigned a fourth order lens instead. Erosion of the island eventually endangered the first light, and in 1896 a steel skeletal tower was erected to replace it. The island continued to shift and in 1948 this second lighthouse was demolished, as the waves threatened to bring it down. The first order lens was first displayed at the Newport News Mariners Museum in 2004 it was moved to an enclosed pavilion on the Portsmouth, Virginia waterfront. History The island on which this light stood was originally called Little Watts Island, though by 1867 the light was referred to as if it were on the much larger Watts Island proper a short ways north. It was constructed in 1833 by John Donahoo and is the only one of his thirteen lights outside of Maryland. The island was plagued with erosion, and by 1923 four of the original convert 7 acre m2 had disappeared. In that year the light was automated and the entire island, including the keeper s house, was sold to a Baltimore insurance executive, save a convert 30 ft m adj on diameter plot centered on the tower. History The first light on the site was built in 1829. The current structure at Sandy Point is the fourth lighthouse built on the site and was made of granite and iron in 1867. The light was deactivated in 1973 and United States Fish and Wildlife Service acquired the lighthouse. The lighthouse was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1974. ref name nris It became dilapidated and was sold to New Shoreham in 1984, and relighted in 1989. Also in 2008 the light underwent restoration ,and it hasn t reopened yet. A wind generator and solar panels provide much of the power for the building.
