He became state secretary of the Queensland Boilermakers Union in 1943, and served as president of the Queensland Trades and Labour Council from 1967 to 1976 president of the Australian Labor Party state executive from 1968 to 1976 and as an executive of the Australian Council of Trade Unions and a member of the ALP s federal executive. In the 1970s, Egerton was Prime Minister of Australia Prime Minister Gough Whitlam s right hand man in Queensland and frequently clashed with the state s conservative Premiers of Queensland Premier Joh Bjelke Petersen . Biography Wilson was born March 1, 1864 in Danzig, Germany and emigrated to the U.S., joining the Navy from New York state. On July 1, 1897, he was serving as a boilermaker on the USS Puritan BM 1 when one of the crown sheets collapsed on boiler E. He entered the fireroom after wrapping wet cloths around his face and arms to protect him from the heat and flames. Once in the fireroom he opened the safety valve to prevent the other boilers from being damaged or destroyed. Refimprove date December 2009 Thomas Wilson was a Southern USA southern American business magnate who was active from the early 1850s until his death in the early 20th century. He immigrated to the United States in the 1850s from Scotland , where he had been raised by his grandfather, a Scottish laird . Wilson, although he came from an aristocratic family , had little formal education . He arrived in New York City with less than one Pound Sterling pound and a wife in tow. He was hired as an apprentice boilermaker and rose quickly along the corporate ladder. By the end of the American Civil War he owned a change of foundries. By this time he had fathered several children, one of whom had died. He then moved to South Carolina and established a number companies throughout the Souther USA South . He served as head of the Atlantic Coast Line Railroad , the St. Charles Hotel and the First National Bank of Sumter among others. He owned large swathes of land throughout the South, but with especially large ones in Florida . These included all of what is now Myrtle Beach , South Carolina.
