McKinney boxed as a professional from 1973 until 1983 mainly in the Orlando, Florida Orlando and Tampa areas. He was a fan favorite at both the Curtis Hixon Hall in Tampa and the Sports Stadium in Orlando. McKinney was managed by Lou Viscusi and trained by Bill Gore. Viscusi and Gore were two of the most respected boxing figures in the Tampa, Florida area. On September 5, 1973 McKinney scored a victory over Laberon Loake at the Orlando Sports Stadium. He worked as a drummer in a Circus performing art circus band, then after serving in the United States Army in World War I settled in Springfield, Ohio where he took over leadership of the Synco Jazz Band. After hiring drummer Cuba Austin , McKinney worked as leader and business manager. After touring the U.S. Midwest , they got a residency at the Arcadia Ballroom in Detroit, Michigan in 1926. In Detroit they were heard by bandleader and music promoter Jean Goldkette , who arranged a more lucrative home base for the band in Detroit s Greystone Hotel Ballroom.
