Rules First, thirteen cards are dealt, squared up, and turned face up. This pile makes up the reserve. Then a card is placed as the first foundation. Then, below the reserve, twelve cards are dealt in three rows of four cards each. As they become available, the seven other cards of the same rank as the first foundation card are placed in the foundations as well, and all are built up regardless of suit until each contains thirteen cards. For example, if the card dealt after the reserve is formed is a seven, the other sevens should start the other foundations. But the other foundations cards are subject on this restriction The first foundation must be built up first until it has thirteen cards. When the first foundation is finished, the other seven foundations can be started and built at the same time. The top card of the reserve is available for play only on the foundations. The top cards of the tableau piles initially containing one card are available for play both on the foundations and on the reserve. The tableau cards are built down regardless of suit, and only one card can be moved at a time. Building in this case is round the corner, i.e. an ace is ranked between a king and a two. Spaces in the tableau are filled using only from the wastepile or the stock never from the tableau , but not immediately the player can leave a space as long as one likes. During the restriction, while the first foundation is still being built, only a card that is the same rank as the first card of the first foundation are placed is placed on it foundation cards cannot be built or built upon, in the tableau. unreferenced date February 2011 In television and film , a plot point is a significant event within a plot that digs into the action and spins it around in another direction. It can also be an object of significant importance, around which the plot revolves. It can be anything from an event to an item to the discovery of a character or motive. The plot point is usually introduced at the exposition of the movie. Noted screenwriting teacher Syd Field teaches that the ideal movie plot has the first plot point occurring around the 30th minute of the film. Others say that two plot points define the three acts of a movie, and that, if this is a 120 min one, those plot points must be located around the 30th minute and the 90th minute. The Bandbox Plot of November 4, 1712 was an attempt on the life of Robert Harley, Earl of Oxford , the then British Lord Treasurer , which was foiled by the perspicacity of Jonathan Swift author of Gulliver s Travels , who happened to be visiting the Earl of Oxford. A bandbox was a lightweight hat box this particular one had been configured to fire a number of loaded and cocked pistols on opening, much as a modern day parcel bomb might be arranged to detonate on opening. In this case, the triggers were attached to a thread Swift, perceiving the thread, seized the package and cut the thread thus disarming the device. The attack was laid at the door of the British Whig Party Whig party and threw enormous popular sympathy behind Harley. Plot drift is generally though not exclusively seen as contrary to good storytelling technique. A sign of plot drift can be the increased introduction of new characters and settings nearer to the end of a story. Refimprove date July 2009 A plot hole , or plothole , is a gap or inconsistency in a storyline that goes against the flow of logic established by the story s Plot narrative plot , or constitutes a blatant omission of relevant information regarding the plot. These include such things as unlikely behaviour or actions of characters, illogical or impossible events, events happening for no apparent reason, or statements events that contradict earlier events in the storyline. While many stories have unanswered questions, unlikely events or chance occurrences, a plot hole is one that is essential to the story s outcome. Plot holes are usually seen as weaknesses or flaws in a story, and writers usually try to avoid them to make their stories seem as realistic as possible. However, certain genre s and some media which require or allow suspension of disbelief are more tolerant of plot holes. Writers can deal with plot holes in different ways, from completely rewriting the story, to having characters acknowledge illogical or unintelligent actions, to having characters make vague statements that could be used to deflect accusations of plot holes e.g. I ve tried everything I can think of... to keep critics from asking why a particular action was not taken . The nature of the plot hole and the developmental stage at which it is noticed usually determine the best course of action to take. For example, a motion picture that has already wrapped production would much more likely receive an added line of dialogue rather than an entire script rewrite.
