The style was invented by George Dance the Younger George Dance and first used on John Boydell s Boydell Shakespeare Gallery Shakespeare Gallery in Pall Mall, London in 1789 later the British Institution demolished in 1868 . Ammonite motifs were also used on buildings in Regent Street Beginnings 1811 to 1825 Old Regent Street , probably by John Nash architect John Nash from around 1818 demolished in the 1920s . Architect, geologist and fossil collector Amon Wilds used the Ammonite Order on the fa ade of his house in Castle Place in Lewes , probably as a pun ning reference to his forename.     Miserden Castle was a castle near the village of Miserden in Gloucestershire , England .   1. John Landseer

    John Landseer 1769 1852 was an English landscape engraver. Biography He was born in 1769 in Lincoln, Lincolnshire Lincoln , the son of a jeweller, and apprenticed to William Byrne engraver William Byrne the engraver. He exhibited for the first time at the Royal Academy in 1792. He achieved acclaim as an engraver, and in 1806 delivered to the Royal Institution a series of lectures on engraving, which were later published, but was soon dismissed following a dispute with the son of the engraver John Boydell , who had died in 1804, about comments he had made about the elder Boydell. In the 1806 he was elected an Associate Engraver of the Royal Academy , but had a dispute with the Academy over their failure to admit engravers as full members. This lasted until 1836 and was an ineffectual protest. In 1813 he lectured to the Surrey Institution on The Philosophy of Art . He was a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries of London Society of Antiquaries . Landseer died in London 20 February 1852 and was buried in Highgate Cemetery Works He contributed to Rees s Cyclopaedia articles on schools of engraving, namely French, Vol. 15, 1810 German, Vol. 16, 1810 Low Countries, Vol. 21, 1812 Italian, Vol 19, 1811. He also engraved a series of plates, with monogram s etc. of French, German, Low Countries and Italian engravers. All his articles are of monograph length and may have re cycled his Royal Institution material. Family Landseer married a Miss Potts with whom he had four children, Thomas Landseer Thomas , Edwin Landseer Edwin , Charles Landseer Charles and Jessica Landseer Jessica , who later became famous in the art world.
