Personal life In 1774 he settled on the Catawba River in Rowan County, North Carolina Rowan County , later Burke County, and married there, Priscilla Brank, daughter of Peter Brank. Military career Serving in the Revolutionary War as an American soldier in the North, he was an ensign, and at the battles of Brandywine, Germantown and at Valley Forge. In the South he was at the battles of Musgrove Mill and Kings Mountain. After the war he settled at Vanceville on Reems Creek, Burke County, which is now Buncombe County. In 1786 and 1791 he was a member from Burke County of the North Carolina House of Commons and in 1791 he and Colonel William Davidson from Rutherford County introduced in that house petitions to create the County of Buncombe. In 1792 he became and remained the Clerk of the County Court of that new county in whose minutes his beautiful penmanship appears. He, and General Joseph McDowell and Mussendine Matthews as North Carolina commissioners superintended in 1799 the running of the line between North Carolina and Tennessee from the southern border of Virginia southwardly across Big Pigeon River. He was born in Colborne, Ontario Colborne , Norfolk County, Ontario Norfolk County , Upper Canada , the son of Israel Wood Powell Ontario politician Israel Wood Powell and Melinda Boss. His brother Walker Powell Walker later served in the legislative assembly for the Province of Canada. Powell was educated in Port Dover, Ontario Port Dover and at McGill University , where he studied medicine. He set up practice in Port Dover, moving to Victoria, British Columbia in 1862. Powell was surgeon for the local fire department and also served in the militia. He was also a founding member of a freemason lodge there and later served as provincial grand master. Powell was elected to the House of Assembly of Vancouver Island in 1863 he was defeated when he ran for reelection in 1866 and again in 1868. He served as chairman of the General Board of Education from 1867 to 1869. In 1865, he married Jane Jennie Brank. He was a supporter of union with Canada and was named superintendent of Indian affairs after British Columbia became part of Canada in 1871, serving in that post until 1889. In 1886, Powell became the first president of the Medical Council of British Columbia. He was also the first chancellor for the University of British Columbia . Powell died in Victoria at the age of 78. A number of geographical features of British Columbia, including Powell River British Columbia Powell River and Powell Lake , were named in his honour. The name originates from the construction s purpose to provide the school board of trustees with funds by means of the theatre hall, library, casino and shop rents. Today, Dohodno Zdanie is a cultural monument and one of the symbols of Rousse. A six member city commission accepted the requirements that the project for the building should be completed in 1896. Those included no less than nine shops, two storeys, a 200 square metre casino, a 300 square metre theatre hall and a 200 square metre library hall. An authoritative jury discussed 15 projects that participated in a contest for the construction of the building, and chose the Voil une id e project by Austria n architect Peter Paul Brang on 20 February 1897. An auction on 26 January 1898 determined the construction contractors, Gatyu Tsonev and Petar Atanasov. The construction manager on behalf of the Rousse municipality was Georg Lang because the architect offered unfavourable conditions , while on behalf of the contractors the manager was Frank Scholz. The construction of the building met severe financial problems due to the increase of the initial costs of 350,000 Bulgarian lev leva , the school board of trustees was forced to borrow an initial 200,000 and then a further 50,000 from the Stremlenie company, mortgaging its own property, and then conclude another loan agreement with Girdap Bank for 600,000 leva. The municipality mortgaged its cattle butchering receipts and the school board of trustees mdash its shops and Dohodno Zdanie itself.
