Image Intaglio rollers.JPG thumb A variety of brayers Wiktionary A brayer is a hand roller used in printmaking techniques to spread ink in the process of Offset printing offsetting an image from a plate to paper. Materials They can be made of Vulcanization composition rubber , rubber , sponge , Polymethyl methacrylate acrylic , polyurethane or leather . They are mounted on a spindle rod or pin, attached to a wooden handle somewhat shaped to accommodate the hand. Others have an all metal support, while larger brayers have a double handle to apply maximum pressure. Process The printer uses a spatula to lay out an ink pad usually on glass, but as long as the preparation surface is tight and smooth, there are acceptable alternatives. When the ink is clear of debris and lumps, it is ready for the brayer which is rolled systematically across the pad to produce an even layer of ink on the roller. The brayer is then applied to the block so that the ink is evenly transferred to the raised areas before the next stage of pressing paper onto the block or plate. Uses Rubber brayers come in varieties of hardness and are primarily used for relief printing . Leather rollers are only used in lithography . Sponge rollers are used only for paint , scrapbooking and other craft applications. unreferenced date July 2008 A frisket is any material that protects areas of a work from unintended change. Letterpress On a sheet fed letterpress printing machine, a frisket is a sheet of oiled paper that covers the space between the typesetting type or cuts illustrations and the edge of the paper that is to be printed. When the press operator uses a brayer to coat the surface of the type with ink, the ink brayer will often coat the furniture and slugs wood and metal spacers between the columns and around the type. To keep this ink from touching the target sheet, the frisket covers the area that is not desired to print. The frisket is set in a frame, often hinged to the tympan that holds the paper in place. A new frisket has to be cut for each different page or form a well made frisket lasts for hundreds or thousands of impressions. Airbrushing In airbrushing , a frisket is a plastic sheet with an adhesive backing used to masking mask off specific areas of an image so that only the exposed area is covered with paint. The frisket is vital to airbrushing, because it allows the artist to control excess paint spray, create special effects, achieve extreme precision, control edge attributes and to expedite the airbrushing process. A frisket differs from other masks in that it is a single sheet that covers the entire work, parts of which are removed by cutting into the sheet. Friskets are available in matt and glossy finishes. Some friskets are also solvent proof, manufactured for use with solvent reduced and based Polyurethane Uses Urethanes . The frisket is fixed to the painting surface and then the appropriate shapes are cut out of the material using a razor or scalpel. The cut piece is lifted, the exposed area painted, and the process repeated using the cut pieces to mask their matching finished areas. When all painting is finished, the resulting work contains precise shapes with no overspray. Category Printing terminology Category Printing materials Category Tools ... more details

Refimprove auto yes date December 2009 For the French commune Baren, Haute Garonne Baren Audio Baren.ogg listen is a Japan ese hand tool used in printmaking processes such as woodcut or linoleum lino cut . The baren is a disk like device with a flat bottom and on the reverse side, a knotted handle. Paper is placed on an inked block and the baren is used to burnish firmly rub the back of a sheet of paper to pick up ink from a wood or linoleum cut. Process The ink is rolled on with a hand roller called a brayer , but can also be applied to the block using brushes following the methods used in Japan where the baren originated. As well, some people use soluble pencils to colour the block and then dampen it before making a print. Construction The disk inside the baren takes 40 50 days to create, as the craftsman glues one sheet of paper on the disk each day. The disk must then dry for a year s time before the baren is assembled. The baren is made of layers, the paper backing, a flat coil of woven rope covering it, then a bamboo leaf covering the whole, twisted in such a manner as to form the handle on the top. Coil and covering of the baren are woven and formed from parts of the bamboo plant, requiring the skill of a true master. Only one known By whom date March 2011 person in Japan is still making traditional baren for a living. Alternatives Large wooden spoons are also used as burnishing tools in printmaking, glass jars with a smooth circular base can also be used for some applications. Some new world barens are similar in shape to the traditional one with small metal ball bearings embedded in the bottom surface that generate the high point contact pressures supplied by the braided cord and have the low friction offered by the bamboo leaf covering of a traditional brayer. No footnotes date March 2010 About the printmaking process the photographic process Collotype decorative writing Calligraphy Collagraphy sometimes spelled collography is a printmaking process in which materials are applied to a rigid substrate such as paperboard or wood . The word is derived from the Greek language Greek word koll or kolla , meaning adhesive glue and graph , meaning the activity of drawing . The plate can be intaglio printmaking intaglio inked, inked with a roller or paintbrush, or some combination thereof. Ink or pigment is applied to the resulting collage , and the board is used to print onto paper or another material using either a printing press or various hand tools. The resulting print is termed a collagraph or collograph . Substances such as carborundum , acrylic paint acrylic texture medium s, sandpapers, string, cut card, leaves and grasses can all be used in creating the collograph plate. In some instances, leaves can be used as a source of pigment by rubbing them onto the surface of the plate. Different tonal effects and vibrant colours can be achieved with the technique due to the depth of relief and differential inking that results from the collograph plate s highly textured surface. Collography is a very open printmaking method. Ink may be applied to the upper surfaces of the plate with a brayer for a relief print , or ink may be applied to the entire board and then removed from the upper surfaces but remain in the spaces between objects, resulting in an intaglio printmaking intaglio print. A combination of both intaglio and relief methods may also be employed. A printing press may or may not be used. Image Principle of Relief Printing.svg thumb The basic concept of relief printing. A is the block or matrix B is the paper the thick black lines are the inked areas. The thickness of the ink is greatly exaggerated for illustration. A relief print is an image created by a printmaking process where protruding surface faces of the matrix printing plate or block are inked recessed areas are ink free. Printing the image is therefore a relatively simple matter of inking the face of the matrix and bringing it in firm contact with the paper. A printing press may not be needed as the back of the paper can be rubbed or pressed by hand with a simple tool such as a brayer or roller. The matrix in relief printing is classically created by starting with a flat original surface, and then removing e.g., by carving away areas intended to print white. The remaining areas of the original surface receive the ink. The relief family of techniques includes woodcut , metalcut , wood engraving , relief etching , linocut , and some types of collography . Traditional text printing with movable type is also a relief technique. This meant that woodcuts were much easier to use as book illustrations, as they could be printed together with the text. intaglio printmaking Intaglio illustrations, such as engravings, had to be printed separately. Relief printing is one of the traditional families of printmaking techniques, along with the intaglio and planographic printing planographic families. Modern developments have created other types. In intaglio, the recessed areas are the printed areas. The whole matrix is inked, and the ink then wiped away from the surface, so that it remains only in the recesses. Much greater pressure is then needed to force the paper into the channels containing the ink, and a high pressure press will normally be required. Intaglio techniques include engraving , etching , and drypoint . With planographic techniques, such as lithography , the entire surface of the matrix is f ... more details
