The story was published for the first time in 1947 in a literature magazine called Das Karussell . Plot Shortly after World War II in Germany, an older woman wakes up in the dark of the night and catches her husband who is cutting himself a slice of rationed bread. They don t talk about what happened and a perplexed conversation takes place. While they are trying to sleep, she hears her husband chewing the slice of bread secretly. The next evening she prepares dinner and gives him an extra slice of her ration of bread under the pretext that in the evening she can t take the bread all that well. 1. Afghan bread

Image Afghan bread.jpg right thumb Afghan bread Afghan bread , or Nan e Afghani Persian language Persian , is the national bread of Afghanistan . ref http www.mansfieldct.org schools mms reads OSOR06 1 Design Breadwinner 20HTML 20Pages recipes.htm ref The bread is oval or rectangular and baked in a tandoor , a cylindrical oven which is the primary cooking equipment of the sub continental region. The Afghan version of the tandoor sits above ground and is made of bricks, which are heated to cook the bread. The bread, also known as nan , is shaped and then stuck to the interior wall of the oven to bake. Nigella sativa Etymology Black cumin or caraway seeds are often sprinkled on the bread, as much for decoration as for taste, and lengthwise lines are scored in the dough to add texture to the bread. Afghan bread is commonly stocked at Middle Eastern grocery stores in western countries. In Afghanistan the baker still cooks the bread the traditional way by spreading the dough around the tandoor, so that it quickly puffs up and starts to colour and emit a fresh bread smell that draws the early morning throngs of people. The baker then uses two long iron tongs to pull the bread from the tandoor wall. Afghans carry the bread in cloth bags, unlike western breads which are packaged in plastic. Similar to that in Arab countries, bread is served with most meals and is generally torn into shreds and used by those eating to envelope foods, so that they can be picked up and conveyed to the mouth, in a manner similar to a sandwich , and also to soak up liquids on the plate. Since people in Afghanistan normally use their hands to eat, the bread thus acts as both a fork and a spoon . The bread has no firm crust and tastes similar to the Indian cuisine Indian and Pakistani cuisine Pakistani variants of naan bread. It has a dense and rich taste. References references Flatbreads ... 1. Beer bread

unref date September 2011 Beer bread is a simple bread based on the idea that both beer and bread have a common creation process yeast is used to turn sugar into alcohol , which in the case of bread then boils off. Citation needed date August 2011 Image Beer Bread 1.jpg thumb right A loaf of beer bread. Beer bread can be simply made with flour , beer, and sugar. However, it will be fairly dense and heavy unless an additional leavening agent , e.g., baking soda or yeast and sugar, is added. Self raising flour may be used because it is a mixture of flour and leavening agent. Beer bread without a leavening agent is very sturdy and tends not to lose moisture if it is overcooked. The only consequence of overcooking tends to be a thicker crust. Beer bread may also be purchased as a packaged mix with the dry ingredients, including leavening agents, already included. Different types of beer bread can be made by using different beers for instance, a stout or dark beer will give a darker bread with a heavier flavor. Using a beer that is spiced, or has a flavor added, will make a bread with a similar flavor, but less intense than the beer. One can add any flavorings to this simple recipe when mixing the dry ingredients to enhance the flavor taste of bread. Some suggestions include cheddar and dill , sundried tomato and herb, garlic and feta , etc. A consideration when choosing flavors is that if the beer bread is not going to be eaten straight away then the flavors will become enhanced upon storage.
