About the sheath used during breastfeeding the body jewelry Nipple shield jewelry Image Siliconen tepelhoedje vorm voor aanbrengen.jpg thumb shape before application Image Siliconen tepelhoedje vorm na aanbrengen.JPG thumb shape after application A nipple shield is a nipple shaped sheath worn over the areola and nipple during breastfeeding . Modern nipple shields are made of soft, thin, flexible silicone and have holes at the end of the nipple section to allow the breast milk to pass through. Older nipple shields were made of latex and harder, thicker plastics, and often caused more problems than they solved. A 17th century nipple shield held in http houses.shakespeare.org.uk shakespeares birthplace.html Shakespeare s birthplace is made of pewter . Nipple shields are used in various situations Some mothers have small or inverted nipple s which make it difficult for the baby to latch on. Using a shield allows for feeding to progress until the baby s suction draws out the nipple. Small, weak or sick babies often have difficulty latching on to the breast. A nipple shield makes latching easier and prevents the baby becoming discouraged. Babies who had to be bottle fed since birth can become used to the Baby bottle bottle teat . Nipple shields feel more like teats, and aid with the transition to breast feeding. A mother s nipples can become sore or cracked from breastfeeding. Breast shells are hollow plastic disks worn inside the brassiere to protect the nipple from becoming flattened. The disk has a hole in the middle worn toward the nipple side. It is slightly concave to conform to the shape of the breast, but can sometimes still be slightly visible under tight clothing. Shells come apart for washing. This should be done frequently, as the shell also tends to make the mother s breast sweat, which can increase bacteria growth and cause irritation. Breast shells may be used to protect engorged or sore nipples during breastfeeding . The shell can also encourage an inverted nipple to protract come out . If the shell is used to help ready the mother for breastfeeding, this is best done during pregnancy, as the shell can increase leaking of breast milk or colostrum . Some research suggests that breast shells used on inverted nipples may actually hinder the mother s ability to breastfeed successfully. ref cite journal last Alexander first JM coauthors et al. year 1992 month April title Randomised controlled trial of breast shells and Hoffman s exercises for inverted and non protractile nipples journal British Medical Journal. volume 304 issue 6833 pages 1030 2 doi 10.1136 bmj.304.6833.1030 pmid 1586788 pmc 1881748 ref It is also used to collect milk when the baby has not finished the teat.
