Orphan date February 2009 Monkey Breeding is the practice of mating monkeys in captivity with the intent to maintain or produce young. Monkeys reproduce without human interference, so their offsprings characteristics are determined by natural selection . Domestic Monkeys may be intentionally bred by their owners. A person who intentionally mates monkeys to produce babies is referred to as a monkey breeder . Breeding outside of zoos is typically done for commercial gain. History Monkeys have been bred in captivity for hundreds of years. Initially used for circus and street performance, their trainers would breed stock to maintain the correct temperament and to ensure the young are tamed early. Breeding also occurred in European zoos from the 18th century when monkeys were returned from sea voyages and the public took interest in them. Recently large scale commercial breeders have been established. They are typically located in the USA where is there is a growing demand for monkey pets. The cost of breeding is quite high and thus only selected breeders do it in volume ref http www.cmaj.ca cgi reprint 157 9 1192 a.pdf ref . Purebred and registered animals If the breeding is for a purebred animal that will be used for Conformation show exhibition or future breeding pet s or livestock , the animal must be breed register registered and conform to the criteria laid out for that breed in a breed standard kept by a central authority, such as a kennel club for dogs. In addition, the breed club, kennel club, or other governing authority may have other restrictions on the type of animal that can be used for breeding to produce offspring that can be registered. For example, some equidae equine societies allow selective breeding Crossbreeding and backbreeding backbred and crossbred individuals to be bred from most dog clubs do not except in exceptional circumstances, by permission. Most kennel clubs allow any registered individual to be bred from the individual breed club may have additional, stricter criteria. He established a business as a wheelwright in Lonsdale Street, Melbourne Lonsdale Street , which he sold some years later and moved to Woodend, Victoria Woodend where he built and opened the Woodend Hotel in 1852. Subsequently he purchased a large tract of land to develop a stud farm, Snugborough Park on the Tylden Road. Harper proved to be a capable stud farm er and horse breeder to the extent that one of his horses, Banker won the 1863 Melbourne Cup and the Victorian Cup two days later. Banker was a younger brother of the horse Barwon that also ran in the 1863 Melbourne Cup but had finished fourth. Barwon had won the 1862 Victoria Derby , the 1863 VRC St Leger and the Australian Cup in 1861. Such was the joy of the local folk at having not just a Melbourne Cup winner come from the area but also another which had run successfully in a number of well known races, that a public dinner was held to celebrate and toast Harper, the mayor of Woodend and owner of the horse.
