    The Brisbane River cod was a unique form of Maccullochella cod that occurred naturally in the Brisbane River system, an east coast river system in south east Queensland , Australia . Their exact taxonomic status is not known, but based on several genetic studies it is suspected that Brisbane River Cod were a species intermediate between Eastern Freshwater Cod Maccullochella ikei of the Clarence River New South Wales Clarence River and Richmond River systems in northern New South Wales and Mary River Cod of the Mary River Queensland Mary River in central Queensland. All naturally occurring Maccullochella cod in east coast drainages ultimately originate from Murray cod , Maccullochella peelii that entered an east coast river system, likely the Clarence, via a natural river capture event somewhere between 0.62 and 1.62 million years ago mean estimate 1.1 million years ago , as estimated by DNA divergence rates. Brisbane River cod are extinct, from overfishing , habitat destruction and siltation , and whole of catchment scale Bush fire bushfires and ash fish kill s in the 1930s. Brisbane Water is named after Sir Thomas Brisbane , Governor of New South Wales between 1820 and 1825. The towns of Gosford, New South Wales Gosford , Davistown, New South Wales Davistown , Woy Woy, New South Wales Woy Woy and Ettalong Beach, New South Wales Ettalong Beach line the shores of Brisbane Water, which also contains several islands including St Huberts Island . History Brisbane Water is part of the traditional lands of the Guringai Australian Aborigines Aboriginal people. Initial English explorers of the area were assisted by King Bungary, leader of the Broken Bay Guringai tribe who went on to assist Matthew Flinders in the circumnavigation of Australia. Background The Museum of Brisbane MoB occupies the former site of the Brisbane City Gallery in City Hall, and is a social history museum that explores ideas and stories that illuminate Brisbane s past and present and helps visitors to imagine Brisbane s future. The museum was created in response to feedback that a museum for and about the people of Brisbane was needed. Over 1,500,000 people have visited the Museum since its opening. Display Program The MoB has a changing exhibition program that celebrates Brisbane through social history, visual arts, craft and design. All MoB exhibitions are founded on a strong community based relationship. Artist s curators and community groups all provide input into the exhibitions and local products sold in the MoB Store. Each exhibition generally lasts for six to eight weeks. Entrance to MoB exhibitions are free. Gift Shop The MoB also features a large gift shop, with a special focus on local Brisbane artisan craft and works. There is also a special viewing area where visitors can view an artisan at work. Opening Hours The MoB is open 7 days a week, from 10am to 5pm, except for Anzac Day and Christmas Day.
