  1. High energy nuclear physics

High energy nuclear physics is a field of study that examines nuclear matter in energy regimes typically delegated to high energy physics . The primary focus of this field is the study of heavy ion collisions . These types of collisions at sufficient collision energies are theorized to produce the quark gluon plasma . In peripheral nuclear collisions at high energies one expects to obtain information on the electromagnetic production of leptons and mesons which are not accessible in electron positron colliders due to their much smaller luminosities. Previous high energy nuclear Particle accelerator accelerator experiments have studied heavy ion collisions using projectile energies of 1 GeV nucleon up to 158 GeV nucleon. Experiments of this type, called fixed target experiments, primarily accelerate a bunch of ions typically around math 10 6 math to math 10 8 math ions per bunch to speeds approaching the speed of light 0.999c and smash them into a target of similar heavy ion s. While all collision systems are interesting, great focus was applied in the late 1990s to symmetric collision systems of gold beams on gold targets at Brookhaven National Laboratory s Alternating Gradient Synchrotron AGS and uranium beams on uranium targets at CERN s Super Proton Synchrotron . Currently, high energy nuclear physics experiments are being conducted at Brookhaven National Laboratory s Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider RHIC . The four primary experiments PHENIX, STAR, PHOBOS, and BRAHMS study collisions of highly relativistic nuclei. Unlike fixed target experiments, collider experiments steer two accelerated beams of ions toward each other at in the case of RHIC six interaction regions. At RHIC, ions can be accelerated depending on the ion size from 100 GeV nucleon to 250GeV nucleon. Since ... for protons. 1. Landau Institute for Theoretical Physics

The L. D. Landau Institute for Theoretical Physics of the Russian Academy of Sciences is a research institution, located in the small town of Chernogolovka near Moscow . Its main fields of research are Condensed matter theory Quantum field theory Nuclear physics Nuclear and Particle physics elementary particle physics Computational physics Nonlinear dynamics Mathematical physics History The Landau Institute was formed in 1965 to keep the Landau school alive after the tragic car accident of Lev Landau Lev D. Landau . Since its foundation, the institute grew rapidly to about one hundred scientists, becoming one of the worldwide best known and leading institutes for theoretical physics . Unlike many other scientific centers in Russia, the Landau Institute had the strength to cope with the crisis of the nineties in the last century. Although about one half of the scientists accepted positions at leading scientific centers and universities abroad, most of them kept ties with their home institute , forming a scientific network in the tradition of the Landau school and supporting young theoretical physicists in the Landau Institute. Prominent members Up to 1992, the institute was headed by Isaak Markovich Khalatnikov , who was then replaced by Vladimir E. Zakharov . Its numerous prominent scientists, mathematician s as well as physicists , include the Nobel laureate Alexei Alexeyevich Abrikosov as well as Lev Gor kov , Anatoly Larkin , Arkady Migdal , Sergei Novikov mathematician Sergei Novikov , Alexander Markovich Polyakov Alexander Polyakov , Valery Pokrovsky and Yakov G. 1. Yerevan Physics Institute

Yerevan Physics Institute Lang hy is a research and development institute, located in Yerevan , Armenia . It was founded in 1942 as a branch of Yerevan State University by brothers, Abraham Alikhanov and Artem Alikhanian . It is often referred to by the acronym YerPhI . History The Institute was founded because of the scientific missions of brothers Abraham Alikhanov and Artem Alikhanian to Mt. Aragats , the highest peak in modern Armenia. The aim of these expeditions was to study cosmic rays . Proton and neutron components as well as narrow air showers were discovered during these investigations. The Alikhanov Alikhanian mass spectrometer was developed here and became the prototype for hodoscopic devices that have played a major role in nuclear physics research. The search for new particles resulted in discovery of existence of rather energetic particles as a component of cosmic rays USSR license for discovery N 384 . In 1963 the Institute was transferred to the USSR State Committee on Atomic Energy. The construction of an electron accelerator accomplished in 1967 became an important landmark in the history of the YerPhI. In 1970 a group from YerPhi was awarded the Lenin Prize for the development of track spark chambers. Research The institute with 6 GeV electron ring accelerator the largest in USSR is located on 300,000 square meters. YerPhI also has two high altitude Cosmic Ray Stations on Mount Aragats 3,200 m and Nor Amberd 2,000 m . The scientific activities of YerPhI include Researches on quantum field theory and statistical physics, Investigations ... abroad international collaborations at TJNAF , HERA , CERN , JINR .
