  1. Embedded servo

Embedded servo or wedge servo is a type of servomechanism servo configuration used on hard disk s. Embedded servo systems embed the feedback signals for the read write head positioner usually a voice coil motor inside gaps wedges in the data tracks of the disk. This setup allows the entire set of platters to be used, instead of having to reserve one or two surfaces for the servo s use, which makes more space for data available on the drive. Embedded servo was originally developed in the 1970s, and started to appear on mass market hard drives for personal computer s in the late 1980s. As with dedicated servo drives, the control signals are written at the factory using a special device called a servowriter , and cannot usually be regenerated in the field. Drives with errors in the servo areas are considered to be badly damaged and should be replaced. 1. Embedded value

The Embedded Value EV of a life insurance company is the present value of future profits plus adjusted net asset value . It is a construct from the field of actuarial science which allows insurance companies to be valued. Background Life insurance policies are long term contracts, where the policyholder pays a premium to be covered against a possible future event such as the death of the policyholder . Future income for the insurer consists of premiums paid by policyholders whilst future outgo comprises claims paid to policyholders as well as various expenses. The difference, combined with income on and release of statutory reserves, represents future profit. Net asset value is the difference between the total assets and liabilities of an insurance company. For companies, the net asset value is usually calculated at book value . This needs to be adjusted to market value s for EV purposes. Furthermore, this value may be discounted to reflect the lock in of some of the assets by their nature. An example of such a lock in would be assets held within the with profits fund Value of the insurer EV measures the value of the insurer by adding present value today s value of the existing business i.e. future profits to the market value of net assets i.e. accumulated past profits . It is a conservative measure of the insurer s value in the sense that it only considers future profits from existing policies and so ignores the possibility that the insurer may sell new policies in future. 1. Continuously embedded

In mathematics , one normed vector space is said to be continuously embedded in another normed vector space if the inclusion function between them is continuous function continuous . In some sense, the two norms are almost equivalent , even though they are not both defined on the same space. Several of the Sobolev inequality Sobolev embedding theorems are continuous embedding theorems. Definition Let X and Y be two normed vector spaces, with norms sub X sub and sub Y sub respectively, such that X     Y . If the identity function inclusion map identity function math i X hookrightarrow Y x mapsto x math is continuous, i.e. if there exists a constant C     0 such that math x Y leq C x X math for every x in X , then X is said to be continuously embedded in Y . Some authors use the hooked arrow &ldquo & x21aa &rdquo to denote a continuous embedding, i.e. &ldquo X   & x21aa   Y &rdquo means &ldquo X and Y are normed spaces with X continuously embedded in Y &rdquo . This is a consistent use of notation from the point of view of the category of topological vector spaces , in which the morphism s &ldquo arrows&rdquo are the continuous linear map s. Examples A finite dimensional example of a continuous embedding is given by a natural embedding of the real line X     R into the plane Y     R sup 2 sup , where both spaces are given the Euclidean norm math i mathbf R to mathbf R 2 x mapsto x, 0 math In this case, x sub X sub     x sub Y sub for every real number X . In mathematics , the notion of being compactly embedded expresses the idea that one set or space is well contained inside another. There are versions of this concept appropriate to general topology and functional analysis . Definition topological spaces Let X ,  T be a topological space , and let V and W be subset s of X . We say that V is compactly embedded in W , and write V   &sub &sub   W , if V   &sube   Cl V   &sube   Int W , where Cl V denotes the Closure topology closure of V , and Int W denotes the Interior topology interior of W and Cl V is Compact space compact . Definition normed spaces Let X and Y be two normed vector space s with norms sub X sub and sub Y sub respectively, and suppose that X   &sube   Y . We say that X is compactly embedded in Y , and write X   &sub &sub   Y , if X is continuously embedded in Y i.e., there is a constant C such that x sub Y sub   &le   C x sub X sub for all x in X and The embedding of X into Y is a compact operator any bounded set in X is totally bounded in Y , i.e. every sequence in such a bounded set has a subsequence that is Cauchy sequence Cauchy in the norm sub Y sub . If Y is a Banach space , an equivalent definition is that the embedding operator the identity i     X   &rarr   Y is a compact operator . When applied to functional analysis, this version of compact embedding is usually used with Banach spaces of functions. Several of the Sobolev inequality Sobolev embedding theorems are compact embedding theorems.
