The Kansan glaciation or Kansan glacial see Pre Illinoian was glacial stage and part of an early conceptual climatic and chronological framework composed of four glacial and interglacial stages. History Kansan glaciation was used by early geomorphologist s and Quaternary geologist s to subdivide glacial and nonglacial deposits within north central United States from youngest to oldest and are as follows Wisconsin glaciation Wisconsin glacial Sangamonian stage Sangamonian interglacial Illinoian stage Illioian glacial Yarmouthian stage Yarmouthian interglacial Kansan glacial Aftonian interglacial Nebraskan glaciation Nebraskan glacial As developed between 1894 and 1909, the Kansan Stage was based on a model that assumed that the Pleistocene deposits contained only two glacial till s and one volcanic ash bed within Nebraska and Kansas. Of these two proposed glacial tills, the Kansan till, which defined the Kansan Stage, was the upper of the two glacial tills and the Nebraskan till, which defined the Nebraskan Stage, was the lower of the two glacial tills. It was argued that a single paleosol developed in the Nebraskan till and interglacial deposits separated the Kansan and Nebraskan tills. Image Glacial Tarn Formation EN.svg thumb right 300px Zone of plucking in the formation of tarns and cirques . Image PluckedGraniteAlandIslands.JPG thumb right 300px Glacially plucked granitic bedrock near Mariehamn, land Islands . cleanup date April 2012 expert subject Geology date April 2012 Plucking is a glacial phenomenon which erodes and transports bedrock. As a glacier moves down the valley, there is friction with the rock floor. This friction causes the basal ice of the glacier to melt and infiltrate joints in the bedrock where it then freezes. As the glacier moves on, the rock now bonded to the glacier, plucked from the bedrock onto the base of the glacier and carried with it. These plucked rocks can also cause abrasion mechanical abrasion against the bedrock and walls. Glacial plucking exploits pre existing fractures in the bedrock. This plays a key role in opening and creating new fractures but has only provided small segments of loose material. This is then followed by the entrainment physical geography entrainment of the loosened rock by the ice. During the process of entrainment, loose rock material is frozen onto the base of the glacier and incorporated into the glacial ice. It is significant when the bedrock is highly jointed, as this allows meltwater to penetrate. Plucking is also known as quarrying.
