Informatics academic field Informatics is the academic field concerned with the study of the foundations, theory, structure, communication, and use of information. Computational informatics, as a subfield of informatics, studies information using computational methodologies. Computational informatics can also be interpreted as the use of computational methods in the information sciences. Development From a historical viewpoint, medical informatics scientists also known as medical informaticians started to use artificial intelligence and Baysian statistical methods in diagnosis and medical decision making, as early as in the 1970s. An example is the MYCIN system developed at Stanford University . The field has since evolved to use a wide range of computational methods and to interact with all possible scientific and other disciplinary domains. In the recent years, the field integrates the following Computational techniques Artificial intelligence, algorithms for architectures ranging from single CPU to massively parallel machines , programming, object oriented system design, databases, information retrieval, computer graphics and visualization, data mining, information extraction. br Probability, statistics and decision science Theory of probability, statistical inference, cost risk benefit analysis, probabilistic analysis, stochastic modeling, decision theory, statistical data analysis, probabilistic networks, pattern classification, statistical learning and modeling, statistical data mining. br Applied mathematics Graph theory, differential equations, optimization theory, wavelets, group theory. br Electrical engineering methods signal and image processing. br Domain knowledge Art and cultural heritages, biology, chemistry, engineering, medicine, the Web. br User sciences Design, human computer interaction, evaluation. br Cyberinfrastructure for informatics search engines ... . Materials informatics is a field of study that applies the principles of informatics academic field informatics to materials science and engineering to better understand the use, material selection selection , development, and discovery of material s. This is an emerging field, with a goal to achieve high speed and robust acquisition, management, analysis, and dissemination of diverse materials data. This field of endeavor is not limited to some traditional understandings of the relationship between materials and information. Some more narrow interpretations include combinatorial chemistry , Process Modeling , materials property databases, materials data management and product life cycle management . Materials informatics is at the convergence of these concepts, but also transcends them and has the potential to achieve greater insights and deeper understanding by applying lessons learned from data gathered on one type of material to others. By gathering appropriate meta data, the value of each individual data point can be greatly expanded. Beyond computational methods? The concept of materials informatics is addressed by the Materials Research Society . For example, material informatics is the theme of the December 2006 issue of the MRS Bulletin . Development informatics is a field of both research and practice focusing on the application of information systems in socio economic development. The informatics terminology is intended to be a translation of the French informatique . It indicates a broad and systemic view that encompasses four inter linked levels Data, information and knowledge Information and communication technologies Processes of learning, decision making and communication Wider human, organisational and national context The terminology is therefore intended to indicate a broader approach than that taken by the more techno centric definitions of either Information and Communication Technologies for Development ICT4D , which focuses on use of ICTs for delivery of specific development goals, or Information and Communication Technologies and Development ICTD , which looks at use of ICTs in developing countries. However, it is unclear whether these differences are understood or used in practice. ref cite web url http chriscoward.wordpress.com 2009 03 11 ict4d ictd or what first Chris last Coward title ICT4D, ICTD, or what? date 11 March 2009 accessdate 2009 08 05 ref The main network for those active in development informatics is the International Development Informatics Association, ref cite web url http www.developmentinformatics.org title International Development Informatics Association accessdate 2009 08 05 ref which organises conferences and publications in the field. Unreferenced date August 2007 Expert subject culture date August 2008 Humanistic Informatics also known as Humanities informatics is one of several names chosen for the study of the relationship between human culture and technology . The term is fairly common in Europe , but is little known in the English speaking world , though Digital Humanities also known as Humanities computing is in many cases roughly equivalent. Humanistic informatics departments were generally started in the 1990s when universities rarely taught humanities based approaches to the rapidly developing computerized society. For this reason, the field was quite broadly defined, and included courses in humanities computing, basic introductions to how computers work, historical developments of technology, technology and learning, digital art and literature and digital culture. Today several departments have declared more specialized areas of research, such as digital arts and culture at the University of Bergen , and socio cultural communication with and without technology at the University of Aalborg . Digital Humanities is a primary topic, and there are several universities in the US and the UK that have Digital Arts and Humanities research and development centers. One aspect of Digital Humanities that will grow will be the intersection of new digital media and the humanities, particularly in the gaming industry which has developed both casual and serious gaming and game design strategies to foster learning in the humanities and all other academic disciplines. A key principle in all digital interactive media or games is the storyline the narrative or quest or goal of the game is primary to both literary works and games. Characters and players go on the quest, and playing the game becomes the narrative. Parliamentary informatics is the application of information technology to the documentation of legislative activity. The principal areas of concern are the provision, in a form conveniently readable to humans or machines, of information and statistics about individual legislators particular legislative proposals votes thereon text of legislation Parliamentary informatics is carried on both by officials of legislatures and by private for profit and non profit actors, with motivations ranging from the administration of parliaments to lobbying and facilitating democratic discourse. The division of activities between official and unofficial activity differs widely between polities, even within a single country. There exists substantial overlap with disciplines such as psephology and, as far as the text of successfully enacted legislation is concerned, legal informatics in general. The use of parliamentary informatics is also a rapidly growing trend in parliamentary monitoring. In a September 2011 joint report from the National Democratic Institute and World Bank Institute , a survey of parliamentary monitoring organizations PMOs found that parliamentary informatics are used by approximately 40 percent of PMOs worldwide. The report states, These tools can automatically aggregate and organize information from parliamentary websites and other information sources, generate visualizations such as political finance maps , and create new platforms for citizens to interact with MPs or participate in parliamentary monitoring and policy analysis. ref http www.ndi.org files governance parliamentary monitoring organizations survey september 2011.pdf Strengthening Parliamentary Accountability ...
