DISPLAYTITLE CDC? Image Cdcxslr810.jpg right thumb CDC? by William Steig CDC? is a children s book children s puzzle children s book book written and illustrated by author and cartoonist William Steig . Originally published in 1984, it is a sequel to CDB , and is of the same concept letters and numbers which suggest the sounds of words or phrases are printed as captions for interpretive cartoons. The reader is to guess what the letters and numbers are supposed to represent in actual words. The book is somewhat more sophisticated in content than CDB , using more complicated phrases. The book, in its 1984 release, was originally printed in black and white, and was republished and re released with pen and ink watercolor style pictures and an answer key at the end. To figure out the word puzzles, the reader needs to read the letters, numbers, and symbols aloud, pronouncing their names, not sounding them out. The picture accompanying each puzzle helps give the reader hints to the coded phrase. ref http us.macmillan.com cdc Macmillan CDC Website ref ref http www.amazon.com C D Sunburst Book dp 0374410240 Amazon.com ref ref http media.families.com blog c d b and c d c william steig Media.Families.com ref Title translation The books title, CDC? , translates as See CEE, pronunciation of the letter c s name the DEE, pronunciation of the letter d s name, which sounds close to DUH, casual pronunciation of the Sea CEE ? The CDC 6400 , a member of the CDC 6000 series , was a Mainframe computer mainframe computer made by Control Data Corporation in the 1960s. The central processing unit was architecturally compatible with the CDC 6600 . But in contrast to the 6600, which had 10 parallel functional units which could work on multiple instructions at the same time, the 6400 had a unified arithmetic unit, which could only work on a single instruction at a time. This resulted in a slower, lower performance CPU, but one that cost significantly less. Memory, peripheral processor based I O, and peripherals were otherwise identical to the 6600. The CDC 6500 was a dual CPU 6400. The CDC 6700 was also a dual CPU machine, but had one 6600 CPU and one 6400 CPU. The CDC 6415 was an even cheaper and slower machine it had a 6400 CPU but with only seven CDC 6000 series Peripheral processors PPU s instead of the normal 10. Wren was the major brand name for a series of 5.25 inch hard disk s produced by Control Data Corporation CDC for the microcomputer market during the 1980s. They evolved through five major versions, I through V, using custom attachments but later adapting SCSI . Other brands included the Elite 5.25 inch 7,200 RPM drives, the Swift 3.5 inch series, and the relatively rare Sabre 8 inch drives. Wren was a major brand during the 1980s, especially in the high end market where their 5,400 RPM voicecoil based technology gave them a performance edge. However, by the 1980s CDC was in the midst of selling itself off leading to its eventually disappearance. The drive division was spun off as Imprimis in 1986. Seagate Technology , who had been lagging Wren and Elite in the high performance market, purchased Imprimis and rebranded the entire line as Seagate in 1989. Variants SCOPE for the CDC 3000 series. SCOPE for the CDC 6000 series. SCOPE and SCOPE 2 for the CDC 7600 Cyber 76. SCOPE for the CDC 3000 series SCOPE for the CDC 6000 series This operating system was based on the original Chippewa Operating System . In the early 1970s, it was renamed NOS BE for the CDC Cyber machines. The SCOPE operating system is a file oriented system using mass storage, random access devices. It was designed to make use of all capabilities of CDC 6000 computer systems and exploits fully the multiple operating modes of all segments of the computer. Main tasks of SCOPE are controlling job execution, storage assignment, performing segment and overlay loading. Its features include comprehensive input output functions and library maintenance routines. The dayfile chronologically records all jobs run and any problems encountered. To aid debugging, dumps and memory maps are available. Under control of SCOPE, a variety of assemblers COMPASS , compilers ALGOL , Fortran FORTRAN , COBOL , and utility programs SORT MERGE, PERT TIME, EXPORT IMPORT, RESPOND, SIMSCRIPT , APT programming language APT , OPTIMA etc. may be operated. The computer emulation community has made repeated attempts to recover and preserve this software without success.
