  1. Calendar year

unreferenced date June 2009 Generally speaking, a calendar year begins on the New Year New Year s Day of the given calendar system and ends on the day before the following New Year s Day. By convention, a calendar year consists of a natural number of day s. To reconcile the calendar year with an astronomical cycle which could not possibly be reckoned in a whole number of days , certain years contain Intercalation extra days . Through further insertion of non day units of time, the calendar year can be further synchronized however, these extra units of time are not considered part of the calendar. The Gregorian calendar Gregorian year begins on January 1 and ends on December 31 with a length of 365 days in an ordinary year and 366 days in a leap year giving an average length of 365.2425 days. This is very close to the average length of 76 Islamic calendar years based on the average time between successive vernal equinox es, currently 365.2424 days and increasing marginally . Other formula based calendars can have lengths which are further out of step with the solar cycle, for example, the Julian calendar has It is still important in Orthodox Christianity an average length of 365.25 days, and the Hebrew calendar has an average length of 365.2468 days. The astronomer s mean tropical year which is averaged over equinoxes and solstices is currently 365.24219 days, slightly shorter than the average length of the year in most calendars, but the astronomer s value changes over time, so William Herschel s suggested correction to the Gregorian calendar may become unnecessary by the year 4000. 1. Florentine calendar

Unreferenced date December 2009 The Florentine calendar was used in Italy in the Middle Ages. In this system, the new day begins at sunset. When the reference of a birth was, for example, two hours into the day , this meant two hours after sunset . This means a birth date of August 12 would, by modern reckoning, be considered to be August 11. The year also began not on January 1 but rather on March 25, which is why some dates have an apparent one year discrepancy. For example, a birth date of March 10, 1552 in Florence Florentine reckoning translates to March 10, 1553 in modern reckoning. This was not unusual the French year began on Easter day until 1564, the Venetian year on March 1 until 1522, and the English year on March 25 until 1752 see Gregorian calendar Beginning of the year beginning of the year . Italy was one of the few nations to immediately convert from the Julian calendar to the Gregorian October 4, 1582 was followed by October 15, 1582 Gregorian . The Florentine calendar shares this feature with the Celtic calendar Celtic and Hebrew calendar Hebrew calendars Celtic days too began at sundown they keep birthdays and the beginnings of months and years in such an order that the day follows the night, their adversary Julius Caesar observed in his Commentarii de Bello Gallico Gallic Wars . The 360 day calendar is a method of measuring durations used in financial markets, in computer models, in ancient literature, and in prophetic literary genres. Revising the earlier work of Marco Mastrofini , or an even earlier proposal by Hirossa Ap Iccim Hugh Jones reverend Rev. Hugh Jones , Comte developed a solar calendar with 13 month s of 28 days, and an additional festival day commemorating the dead, totalling 365 days. This extra day added to the last month was outside of the week days of the week cycle, and so the first of a month was always a Monday. On leap year s, an additional festival day also outside the week cycle , to celebrate holy women, would join the memorial day of the dead. The scheme followed the Gregorian calendar rules for determining which years are leap years, and started on January 1. Year 1 of the Great Crisis according to this calendar would be equivalent to the year 1789 in the Gregorian system.
