The Iron Steamboat Company 1881 1932 provided ferry service between Manhattan and Coney Island in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The original fleet consisted of seven iron hulled steamboats , each named after a constellation the Cygnus, the Cepheus, the Cetus, the Pegasus, the Perseus, the Sirius and the Taurus. In later years two older wooden steamboats, the Columbia and the Grand Republic would also be added. Each boat was powered by a single cylinder vertical beam steam engine and was divided into three decks and twelve watertight compartments. Service began in May 1881 and continued until the close of the 1932 season. Initially the line serviced only Coney Island, but over the years service was expanded to Long Branch, New Jersey , Rockaway Beach, New York , and for a brief time Bay Ridge, Brooklyn . Boats left Manhattan half hourly during summer from various piers along the west side and Pier One in Lower Manhattan. Historical significance Flour City Ornamental Iron Works Company was founded by Eugene Tetzlaff in 1893 in Minneapolis , Minnesota . The company was originally a blacksmith shop, but later became a manufacturer of wrought and cast iron. During World War II, Flour City produced aluminum bridge pontoons and aircraft parts. In 1945, Henry J. Neils , first president of the Flour City Ornamental Iron Works Company, began production of aluminum boats . The first aluminum boat produced by Flour City subsidiary, Alumacraft , came off the production line in 1946. Hupp Corporation bought Alumacraft from Flour City in 1960. Later History Flour City Ornamental Iron Works, later known as Flour City Architectural Metal Works, continued its production of ornamental and architectural metal products. In the early 1990s, Flour City became a part of Flour City International, Inc., and its headquarters moved from Minnesota to Tennessee.     Unreferenced date March 2011 The Ashbury Carriage and Iron Company Limited was a manufacturer of railway rolling stock founded by John Ashbury in 1837 at Knott Mill in Manchester , England , near the original terminus of the Sheffield, Ashton under Lyne and Manchester Railway . It moved to Openshaw in 1841 and became a limited company in 1862 as The Ashbury Railway Carriage and Iron Company Ltd. In 1902 the business was transferred to Saltley in Birmingham when it merged with Ashbury, Brown and Marshalls. This was absorbed into the Metro Cammell Metropolitan Amalgamated Railway Carriage and Wagon Company Ltd , which later became the Metro Cammell Metropolitan Cammell Carriage and Wagon Co Ltd . Examples of its rolling stock survive to this day on preserved railways all over the world.
