The dollar glut is a term for the accumulation of United States dollar s outside of the United States, contrasted with the dollar gap that lead to the creation of the Marshall Plan following World War II . The eventual shift to a dollar glut forced the end of the gold standard in the United States and led to the collapse of the Bretton Woods system . The stability of the Bretton Woods system came to depend upon the ability of the U.S. government to exchange dollars for gold at 35 an ounce. The American ability to fulfill this commitment began to diminish as the postwar dollar shortage was transformed into an overabundance of dollars, or dollar glut. ref Oatley, International Political Economy 2007 ref References Reflist Category Dollar Category Gold standard econ stub cs Dollar glut ... more details
Unreferenced date September 2009 In economics , dollar voting is an analogy used to explain how the purchasing choices of consumer s affect which good accounting products will continue to be produced and supplied to the market . Every dollar paid for a particular product may be considered a dollar vote for that product, such that the products with the largest number of dollar votes generate the most Profit economics profit and will therefore continue to be produced. A boycott would be a vote against a product. The reference to dollar is just an example the principle holds for any currency . The expressions vote with your wallet and vote with your dollar refer to dollar voting. Dollar voting is similar in theory to Foot voting . Criticism Some economists, like Amartya Sen , have argued that dollar voting requires near perfect knowledge about any product that one wishes to buy. In 1820, in response to a request from the British colony of Mauritius , the imperial government in London struck silver coins in the denominations of 1 4, 1 8, and 1 16 dollars. The dollar unit in question was equivalent to the Spanish dollar and these fractional coins were known as Anchor Dollars because of the anchor that appeared on them. More of these anchor dollars were struck in 1822 and not only for Mauritius but also for the British West Indies . In addition to this, a 1 2 dollar anchor coin was struck for Mauritius . A year or two later, copper dollar fractions were struck for Mauritius , the British West Indies , and Sierra Leonne . The dollar was the currency of Mauritius until 1877. Initially, it was made up of Spanish dollars , with paper money and new coins being issued in the 1820s see Anchor coinage . The dollar was initially pegged at a value of 2 Indian rupee s, then at 4 shillings pound sterling sterling . In 1822, coins for 25 and 50 sous were issued due to the continued use of the French colonial livre . The dollar circulated alongside sterling and the Indian rupee. An unofficial exchange rate of 2 rupees to the dollar was used, although this overvalued the rupee for a time. In 1877, the Mauritian rupee was introduced.
