North West Cape is a large peninsula of land in the north west coast of Western Australia . Cape Range National Park Cape Range runs down the spine of the peninsula and Ningaloo Reef runs along the western edge. It includes the town of Exmouth, Western Australia Exmouth . In 1618, Dutch East India Company captain Lenaert Jacobszoon and supercargo Willem Janszoon of the Mauritius landed in the area. Phillip Parker King later visited in 1818 and named it North West Cape as well as naming Exmouth Gulf after a fellow Naval Officer. Later, pearl luggers visited the area from Broome, Western Australia Broome . During World War II a military operation codenamed Operation Potshot was done in the area. Orphan date February 2009 Fred Lookout November 1865 August 28, 1949 was a leader of the Osage Nation of Native Americans in the United States Native Americans . Lookout was born near what s now Independence, Kansas , and raised by his paternal grandmother, as his mother died when he was still an infant. He was selected by the Osage s government agent to attend the Carlisle Indian Industrial School , which he did from 1879 to 1884 in 1884 he returned to the reservation upon the death of his father, and refused to return to the school. He married Julia Pryor and settled as a farmer near Pawhuska, Oklahoma Pawhuska . Lookout entered tribal politics in 1908, winning election as assistant principal chief he didn t run for reelection in 1910. In 1914 he was appointed principal chief by United States Secretary of the Interior U.S. Secretary of the Interior Walter L. Fisher , replacing Bacon Rind , who was removed amidst a scandal involving oil leases. He lost his reelection attempt later that year, but won a two year term as principal chief in 1916. Thereafter, he served on the tribal council from 1920 to 1922, and then served a remarkably long third stint as principal chief, from 1926 to his death in 1949. History The name Belknap Lookout has two separate derivations. The word Belknap comes from the surname of Charles E. Belknap . Belknap was a Grand Rapids resident who came home from the Civil War in 1871 to serve Grand Rapids as the first commissioner of the Boy Scouts of America, as mayor in 1884 and as a U.S. congressman in 1888. The word Lookout comes from what is perhaps the neighborhood s most prominent feature, Belknap Hill a 160 ft high bluff overlooking the downtown of the City of Grand Rapids.
