Life The philosopher James of Viterbo was born c. 1255 in Viterbo, Italy. Shortly after that he was appointed by the Pope Bonifice VIII to be the Bishop of Benevento. James of Viterbo is most famous for his book De regimine Christiano. The following year he became the Archbishop of Naples where he also taught. James stayed in Naples as archbishop doing work in philosophy until his death. Education James of Viterbo was taught and heavily influenced by the ideas of St. Augustine and was influenced by other philosophers as well. James also had his own views and had his own influences. James of Viterbo was also taught by Giles of Rome in the fields of philosophy and theology, Giles also followed the ideals of St. Augustine. James became known as the Speculative Doctor for all of his work in theology. Later James earned a doctorate in theology and became a professor of theology at the University of Paris from 1293 to 1300. Career and Works One of his most influential writings was the De regimine Christiano written in Naples. This book was created when there was a conflict among the Pope at that time and Philip of France, the two were first mentioned in the preface and in several other areas of the book making the book apart of the resolution of their controversy. The book was more or less also an effective tool of support for the Pope since many of the ideas he had followed what the pope believed as well. Godfrey of Viterbo ref Geoffrey of Viterbo, Goffredo da Viterbo, Gottfried von Viterbo. ref c. 1120 c. 1196 was a Roman Catholic chronicler , either Italy Italian or Germany German . Biography He was probably an Italian by birth, although some authorities assert that he was a Saxony Saxon German like his imperial patrons. He evidently passed some of his early life at Viterbo in Italy, but he was educated at Bamberg , where he was taken by Lothair in 1133, gaining a good knowledge of Latin language Latin , possibly preparing for work in governmental service. Following his education, he began working in the Papal Chancellery . In the following years he was active in both governmental and ecclesiastical offices. From an early age he displayed great activity as one of the clergy at the court of Conrad III and later Frederick I, accompanying the latter on many of his campaigns, and frequently fulfilling for him diplomatic missions. About 1140 he became chaplain to the German king, Conrad III of Germany Conrad III but the greater part of his life was spent as secretary notarius in the service of the Holy Roman Emperor Frederick Barbarossa Frederick I Barbarossa , who appears to have thoroughly trusted him, and who employed him on many diplomatic errands, traveling extensively throughout Europe , including over forty trips to Rome . The Treaty of Viterbo or the Treaties of Viterbo was a pair of agreements made by Charles I of Sicily with Baldwin II of Constantinople and William II Villehardouin , Prince of Achaea , on 27 May 1267, which transferred much of the rights to the Latin Empire from Baldwin to Charles. Background The recapture of Constantinople by the Greeks in 1261 had sent Baldwin, the Latin Emperor of Constantinople, always impoverished, to seek aid in Western Europe for a crusade to recapture the throne of the Latin Empire for him. For some time, he had expected aid from Manfred of Sicily , who hoped like his father, Frederick II, Holy Roman Emperor Emperor Frederick II that a crusade might put him in better standing with the Papacy but Manfred was ousted from Kingdom of Sicily Sicily in 1266 by Charles, acting for Pope Clement IV , severely discomfiting Baldwin. Baldwin was residing at the Papal court in Viterbo in 1267 when Clement arranged to reconcile the Emperor and the newly seated King. As the principal vassal of what remained of Baldwin s empire, William was keen to gain an overlord who might be the giver rather than the recipient of subsidy, and who could help defend the Principality against the Despotate of Epirus , which had worsted him in 1259 at the Battle of Pelagonia . His chancellor, Leonardo of Veruli , was sent to Viterbo to negotiate the treaty. Provisions The War of the Euboeote Succession an inheritance dispute between William and the three Lombard lords, or terciers , of Euboea , backed by Republic of Venice Venice and his defeat at Battle of Pelagonia Pelagonia had left William s principality exhausted in resources.
