  1. Polar capsule

Image Myxobolus spinacurvatura.jpg thumb 250px Alataspora solomoni , a myxosporea n parasite of Atlantic Horse Mackerel, showing the arrangement of the polar capsules on either side of the sutural line. Polar capsules are structures found in the valves of Myxosporea n parasites, which contain the polar filament . The polar capsule is constructed of a protein aceous and a polysaccharide layer, both layers of which continue into the polar filament. The mouth of the capsule is covered with a cap like structure. This structure may function as a stopper plug stopper , its digestion in the alimentary tract possibly triggering the discharge of the polar filaments. Two ideas have been proposed to explain the eversion of the polar filaments. Firstly, that the hydrostatic pressure in the polar capsule pushes the filament out, rather like the cnidocyst of coelenterate s. The second is that extrusion is an active process involving contractile proteins and is calcium dependent Uspenskaya, 1982 . References Uspenskaya, A.V. 1984 . Cytology of myxosporidia . 1. Pharmaceutical microbiology

Pharmaceutical microbiology is the part of industrial microbiology that is responsible for ensuring medications do not contain harmful levels of microbes such as bacteria , yeasts and moulds . Drug Safety Drug safety is a major focus of pharmaceutical microbiology. Pathogenic bacteria, yeasts, moulds and toxins produced by microorganisms are all possible contaminants of medicines although stringent, regulated processes are in place to ensure the risk is minimal. Antimicrobial activity Another major focus of pharmaceutical microbiology is to determine how a product will react in cases of contamination . For example You have a bottle of cough medicine . Imagine you take the lid off, pour yourself a dose and forget to replace the lid. You come back to take your next dose and discover that you have indeed left the lid off for a few hours. What happens if a microorganism fell in whilst the lid was off? There are tests that look at that. The product is challenged with a known amount of specific microorganisms, such as E.coli and C.albicans and the anti microbial activity monitored. Methods and specifications Testing of pharmaceutical products is carried out according to a Pharmacopeia of which there are a few types. For example In America, the United States Pharmacopeia is used in Japan there is the Japanese Pharmacopeia in the United Kingdom there is the British Pharmacopoeia and in Europe the European Pharmacopeia . These contain a test method which is to be followed when testing, along with defined specifications for the amount of microorganisms allowed in a given amount of product. The specifications change depending on the product type and method in which it is introduced to the body. Category Microbiology pharmacology stub ...   more details

  1. Agricultural microbiology

Agricultural microbiology is a branch of microbiology dealing with plant associated microbes and plant and animal diseases. It also deals with the microbiology of soil fertility, such as microbial degradation of organic matter and soil nutrient transformations. Soil Microorganisms Bacteria more dominant group of microorganisms in the soil and equal to one half of the microbial biomass in soil. Population 100,000 to several hundred millions for gram of soil Autochthnous Zymogenous groups. Majority are Heterotrophs. Common soil bacteria Arthrobacter, Bacillus, Clostridium, Micrococcus . Actinomycetes intermediate group between bacteria and fungi. Numerous and widely distributed in soil. Abundance is next to bacteria. 104 108 g soil. 70 of soil actinomycetes are Streptomyces. Many of them are known to produce antibiotics. Population increases with depth of soil. Fungi More numerous in surface layers of well aerated and cultivated soils dominant in acid soils. Common genera in soil are Aspergillus, Mucor, Penicillium Trichoderma, Alternaria, Rhizopus. Algae found in most of the soils in number ranges from 100 to 10,000 per g. Protozoa Unicellular population ranges from 10,000 to 100,000 per g of soil. Most of the soil forms are flagellates, amoebae or ciliates. Derive their nutrition by devouring soil bacteria. Abundant in upper larger of the soil. They are regulating the biological equilibrium in soil. Importance of soil microorganisms Involved in nutrient transformation process Decomposition of resistant components of plant and animal tissue Role in microbial antagonism Participate in humus formation Predator of nematodes Surface blooming reduces erosion losses Improve soil structure Involved soil structure Maintenance of biological equilibrium See also Veterinary medicine References reflist Further reading cite book author G. 1. Industrial microbiology

Industrial microbiology or microbial biotechnology encompasses the use of microorganism s in the manufacture of food or industrial products. The use of microorganisms for the production of food, either human or animal, is often considered a branch of food microbiology . The microorganisms used in industrial processes may be natural isolates, laboratory selected mutants or genetically engineered organisms. Antibiotics Industrial microbiology is perhaps best known for its development of antibiotics and pharmaceutical agents. Penicillin , streptomycin , and a host of other antimicrobial agents originated from industrial microbiology in the 1950s and 1960s. Food microbiology Yogurt, cheese, chocolate, and silage animal food are all produced by industrial microbiology processes. Beneficial bacteria such as probiotics are becoming increasingly important in the food industry. ref name SonomotoKYokotaA cite book author Sonomoto, K Yokota, A editor year 2011 title Lactic Acid Bacteria and Bifidobacteria Current Progress in Advanced Research publisher Caister Academic Press isbn 978 1 904455 82 0 ref ref name Tannockpro3 cite book author Tannock GW editor . title Probiotics and Prebiotics Scientific Aspects publisher Caister Academic Press year 2005 isbn 978 1 904455 01 1 ref ref name LjunghWadstrom cite book author Ljungh A, Wadstrom T editors year 2009 title Lactobacillus Molecular Biology ... engineering and drug delivery. 1. Soil microbiology

wikify date November 2011 Soil microbiology is the study of organisms in soil, their functions, and how they affect soil properties. It is believed that between two to four billion years ago, the first ancient bacteria and microorganisms came about in Earth s primitive seas. These bacteria could fix nitrogen, in time multiplied and as a result released oxygen into the atmosphere. This release of oxygen led to more advanced microorganisms. Microorganisms in soil are important because they affect the structure and fertility of different soils. Soil microorganisms can be classified as bacteria, actinomycetes, fungi, algae, and protozoa. Each of these groups has different characteristics that define the organisms and different functions in the soil it lives in. ref name autogenerated1 Rao, Subba. Soil Microbiology. Fourth ed. Enfield Science Publishers, 1999. Print. ref Bacteria Bacteria are the smallest organisms in the soil and are the only soil microorganisms that are prokaryote prokaryotic . All of the other microorganisms are eukaryote eukaryotic , which means they have a more advanced cell structure with internal organelles and the advanced ability to reproduce sexually. A prokaryote has a very simple cell structure with no internal organelles. ref name autogenerated1 Bacteria are the most abundant microorganisms in the soil, and serve many important purposes, one of those being nitrogen fixation among other biochemical processes. ref name autogenerated3 Wood, Martin. Soil Biology. New York Chapman and Hall, 1989. Print ref Biochemical processes One of the most distinguished features of bacteria as a whole is their biochemical versatility. A species called Pseudomonas can metabolize a wide range of chemicals and fertilizers. In contrast, another species known as Nitrobacters can only derive its energy by turning nitrite into nitrate, which results in a gain of oxygen ...
