The Conference recommended that the standard apply to all ships, both military and civilian. The nautical time zone system is an ideal form of the terrestrial time zone system for use on international waters high seas . Beaching is when a ship or boat is laid ashore, or Ship grounding grounded deliberately in shallow water. This is more usual with small Flat bottomed boat flat bottomed boats . In nautical terms , the word Sound is used to describe the process of determining the depth of water in a tank or under a ship. Tanks are sounded to determine if they are full for cargo tanks or empty to determine if a ship has been holed and for other reasons. Soundings may also be taken of the water around a ship if it is in shallow water to aid in navigation. Methods Tanks may be sounded manually or with electronic or mechanical automated equipment. Manual sounding is undertaken with a sounding line a rope with a weight on the end. Per the Code of Federal Regulations, most steel vessels with integral tanks are required to have sounding tubes and reinforcing plates under the tubes which the weight strikes when it reaches the bottom of the tank. Sounding tubes are steel pipes which lead upwards from the ships tanks to a place on deck. The nature of waterways described by any given nautical publication changes regularly, and a mariner navigating by use of an old or uncorrected publication is courting disaster. Every producer of nautical publications also provides a system to inform mariners of changes that effect the chart. In the United States, corrections and notifications of new editions are provided by various governmental agencies by way of Notice to Mariners , Local Notice to Mariners , Summary of Corrections , and Broadcast Notice to Mariners . Radio broadcasts give advance notice of urgent corrections. A convenient way to keep track of corrections is with a Chart and Publication Correction Record Card system. Using this system, the navigator does not immediately update every publication in the library when a new Notice to Mariners arrives, instead creating a card for every chart and noting the correction on this card. When the time comes to use the publication, he pulls the publication and its card, and makes the indicated corrections to the publication.
