  1. Overpopulation in wild animals

merge overpopulation date October 2011 Overpopulation in wild animals occurs when a population of a wild species exceeds the carrying capacity of its ecological niche . Overpopulation is a function of the number of individuals compared to the relevant resources, such as the water and essential nutrients they need to survive. In the wilderness, the problem of animal overpopulation is solved by predator s. Predators tend to look for signs of weakness in their prey, and therefore usually first eat the old or sick animals. This has the side effects of ensuring a strong stock among the survivors, and controlling the population. In the absence of predators, animal species are bound by the resources they can find in their environment, but this does not necessarily control overpopulation. In fact, an abundant supply of resources can produce a population boom that ends up with more individuals than the environment can support. In this case, starvation, thirst and sometimes violent competition for scarce resources may effect a sharp reduction in population in a very short lapse a population crash . Lemming s, as well as other less popular species of rodent s, are known to have such cycles of rapid population growth and subsequent decrease. Some animal species seem to have a measure of self control, by which individuals refrain from mating when they find themselves in a crowded environment. This voluntary abstinence may be induced by stress or by pheromone s. In an ideal setting, when animal populations grow, so do the number of predators that feed on that particular animal. Animals that have birth defect s or weak gene s such as the runt of the litter also die off, unable to compete over food with stronger, healthier animals. In reality, an animal that is not native to an environment ... out of control and ate the farm crops and food that both native and farm animals needed. 1. Wild Animals in Captivity Protection Act 1900

The Wild Animals in Captivity Protection Act 1900 63 & 64 Vict. c.33 , long title An Act for the prevention of cruelty to wild animals in captivity , was an Act of Parliament of the Parliament of the United Kingdom , given the Royal Assent on 6 August 1900 and since repealed. The Act covered any animals not encompassed by the Cruelty to Animals Act 1849 and the Cruelty to Animals Act 1854 , and made it an offence to cause, or permit to be caused, any unnecessary suffering to such an animal held in captivity. To cruelly abuse, infuriate, tease, or terrify it, or to permit another to do so, was also an offence. The penalty was imprisonment with or without hard labour for up to three months, or a fine of up to five pounds. Any action done in the course of killing or preparing an animal for food was exempt, as was any act permitted by the Cruelty to Animals Act 1876 , or the hunting of any animal provided that it had not been released in a mutilated or injured state. The Act was repealed by the Protection of Animals Act 1911 and the Protection of Animals Act 1912 . 1. Wild Animals I Have Known

File Wild Animals Tannerey.jpg thumb Illustration from Ernest Thompson Seton s Wild Animals I Have Known 1898 Wild Animals I Have Known is an 1898 book by naturalist and author Ernest Thompson Seton . The first entry in a new genre of realistic wild animal fiction, Seton s first collection of short stories quickly became one of the most popular books of its day. Lobo the King of Currumpaw , the first story in the collection, was based upon Seton s experience hunting wolves in the southwestern United States. It became a classic, setting the tone for his future works that would similarly depict animals especially predators who were often demonized in literature as compassionate, individualistic beings. Several years after its publication, Seton and his works came under fire during the nature fakers controversy , which began in 1903 when naturalist John Burroughs published an essay called Real and Sham Natural History in Atlantic Monthly . In particular Burroughs blamed Seton s collection of stories for founding the sentimental animal story genre, which he felt featured fabricated events and wild animal behaviors he even amended the title of the collection to Wild Animals I Alone Have Known . ref Burroughs, John. 1. Dangerous Wild Animals Act 1976

The Dangerous Wild Animals Act of 1976 22 July is a law of the United Kingdom that was originally enacted to deal with the increasing fashion in the late 1960s and early 1970s of people keeping interesting pets which were often from the more dangerous species, as well as hybrids between wild and domestic species, such as wolfdog s and Bengal cat s. It was increasingly seen as unacceptable in regards to public safety for the average citizen to be able to acquire a potentially dangerous animal without some form of regulatory control. Its purpose was to ensure that when private individuals kept dangerous wild animals they do so in circumstances which do not create risk to the public and safeguard the welfare of the animals. The Act s schedule designates the species covered, such as many primates , Carnivora carnivore s, larger or venomous reptiles , dangerous spiders and scorpion s. Keeping such animals without a licence is unlawful and the state is also allowed to specify where and how the animal is to be kept. This law also requires keepers to have their animals covered by a satisfactory liability insurance policy. How it works Licences are required for any animal listed on a schedule under the door. These licences will only be granted when the authority is satisfied that it would not be contrary to public interest, not on the grounds of safety or nuisance and that the animal s accommodation is adequate and secure. Where the local authority grant a licence it shall impose conditions on the licence covering issues such as a requirement that the animal be kept only by a person or persons named on the licence restrictions on the movement of the animal from the premises as specified on the licence and A requirement that the licence holder has a current insurance policy which ensures both licence holders and others against any liability caused by the animal. 1. Captive helicopter

A captive helicopter is a helicopter which is tethered to the ground with a rope, as with a captive balloon . Captive helicopters can be used for the same purposes as captive balloons. A primary advantage of captive helicopters is that they can be more accurately steered than captive balloons or kite s in order to compensate for the influence of the wind. A further advantage is that, unlike kites, they can be launched in the absence of wind. Their main disadvantages are that they require power for their flight and are very noisy. Unlike kites which rely solely on the wind for power and balloons which require specialty lighter than air gases , helicopters are normally powered by aviation fuel s. However, it is possible to run captive helicopters electrically by running a cable inside the tether line holding the helicopter. At the end of the 1930s, the German company Telefunken tried to make a longwave transmission experiment with a captive helicopter driven with a three phase, AC power engine. The helicopter should have reached a height of 1000 metres. Because of electrostatic charge s induced by earth s electric field , the fuses melted when the captive helicopter reached a height of 750 metres and the captive helicopter landed roughly. ref Klawitter, Gerd Herold Klaus Oexner, Michael 2000 . Captive NTFS is a discontinued open source project within the Linux programming community, started by Jan Kratochv l. It is a driver wrapper around the original Microsoft Windows NTFS file system software driver driver using parts of ReactOS code. By taking this approach Captive NTFS aimed to provide safe write support to NTFS partitions. Until the release of NTFS 3G , it was the only free NTFS driver with full write support. On January 26, 2006 Jan Kratochv l released version 1.1.7 of his package. This version restores compatibility with recent Linux kernels by replacing the obsolete LUFS Linux Userland File System module with Filesystem in Userspace FUSE File System in Userspace , which as of Linux 2.6.14 has been included into the official Linux kernel.
