  1. Portrait of Caracalla

Image Caracalla01 pushkin.jpg thumb 200px Portrait of Caracalla , copy at the Pushkin Museum , Moscow The best known portrait of Caracalla is that held at the Vatican Museums and of which several copies are known. Judging by the large number of copies and comparison with medieval copies, the type was first created on his assuming full responsibility for the empire after his murder of Publius Septimius Geta Geta in 212 . He is shown with an unusual twist in the neck towards the left and an accentuation of psychological character, inspired by Hellenistic portraiture Hellenistic prototypes but with added Roman feeling. The bust on which the head rests is 18th century, but probably similar to the original. 1. Constitutio Antoniniana

The Constitutio Antoniniana Latin Constitution or Edict of Antoninus also called the Edict of Caracalla was an edict issued in 212 AD , by the Roman Emperor Caracalla . The law declared that Peregrinus Roman all free men in the Roman Empire were to be given full Roman citizen ship and all free women in Empire were given the same rights as Roman women were. Before 212, for the most part only inhabitants of Italia Roman province Italia held full Roman citizenship. Colonies of Romans established in other provinces, Romans or their descendants living in provinces, the inhabitants of various cities throughout the Empire, and small numbers of local nobles such as kings of client countries held full citizenship also. Provincials, on the other hand, were usually non citizens, although some held the Latin Right . Analysis According to Cassius Dio , the only Roman historian to talk about this edict, and with only one sentence, the reasons Caracalla passed this law were mainly to increase the number of people available to tax. In the words of Cassius Dio This was the reason why he made all the people in his empire Roman citizens nominally he was honouring them, but his real purpose was to increase his revenues by this means, inasmuch as aliens did not have to pay most of these taxes. ref http penelope.uchicago.edu Thayer E Roman Texts Cassius Dio 78 .html Cassius Dio, Roman History , book 78, chapter 9. ref It should, however, be noted that Cassius Dio generally saw Caracalla as a bad, contemptible emperor. Another goal may have been to increase the number of men able to serve in the legions, as only full citizens could serve as legionaries in the Military history of the Roman Empire Roman Army . Despite what might have been seen as easy benefits, the edict came at the cost to the Auxiliaries Roman military auxiliaries , which primarily consisted of non citizen men, and led to barbarization ... 1. Arch of Drusus

The Arch of Drusus is an ancient arch in Rome , Italy, close to the First Mile of the Appian Way and next to the Porta San Sebastiano . File Appia antica 2 7 05 003.jpg thumb right 300px The Arch of Drusus The exact origins of the Arch are unclear. It is now generally agreed that it has nothing to do with Nero Claudius Drusus , the conqueror of the Germans. Some versions have the arch being constructed as part of a spur added to the Aqua Marcia by Caracalla in 211 216 AD to take water from that aqueduct to Baths of Caracalla Caracalla s new baths . However, it appears more likely that the arch predated the aqueduct and that the aqueduct was conveniently routed over the top of the arch. Only the central part of this arch is now standing, but it was originally triple, or at least with projections on each side, although never finished. It is built of travertine, faced with marble, and on each side of the archway are columns of Numidian marble with white marble bases. The archway is 7.21 metres high. The aqua Antoniniana, the branch of the Aqua Marcia, ran over this arch, but the brick faced concrete that is visible on the top seems to belong to a later period. The arch may possibly be the arch of Trajan. ref Samuel Ball Platner A Topographical Dictionary of Ancient Rome, London Oxford University Press, 1929. http www1.lib.uchicago.edu cgi bin eos eos title.pl?callnum DG16.P72 ref References references Coord 41 52 25 N 12 30 04 E region IT type landmark source dewiki display title DEFAULTSORT Arch Of Drusus Category Ancient gates in the Aurelian Walls Ancient Rome stub fr Arc de Drusus it Arco di Druso he ...   more details

  1. Mattei sarcophagus I

Orphan date February 2009 The sarcophagus with hunting scenes , known as Mattei I , is an ancient Roman sarcophagus of the 3rd century, displayed at the palazzo Mattei in Rome . It is 1.31m high. From the age of Caracalla onwards carved sarcophagus production shows a kind of reaction to the pittoricism of examples from the preceding era late 2nd early 3rd century , such as the Portona sarcophagus , with a return to richer plasticity, as is also documented in Roman portraiture between 215 and 250. Hugely influenced by their use in the eastern empire and the middle east, hunting scenes in Roman art had started to become popular in Hadrian ic art and the popularity of their use on sarcophagi spread thanks to Caracalla s predilection for Alexander the Great and his hunts and the Mattei example is one of the earliest with such scenes. The hunting scenes, with major influence from the eastern empire. In the Roman world it acquired a new meaning as a signifier of military values, as shown by the Virtus deity Virtus Roma mythology Roma figure in Amazonian dress standing behind the mounted hunter in this scene. This mounted hunter has a physiognomic portrait datable to between 220 and 230, by comparison with the style of the portrait of Caracalla and hurls a spear towards a lion at the right. Beneath this lions paws is a fallen hunter with sword and shield, and under this lion is another, dead lion. To the left are two standing nude divinities, possibly the Dioscuri . To the right, above the live lion, is a beardless mounted hunter in a tunic and another nude standing figure. The composition is very crowded, with overlapping figures in a scheme unknown in 2nd century classicism. The use of drilling and the abundant chiaroscuro of high relief are typical of the expressionism of the turn of the 2nd 3rd centuries, though the solid plasticity and consistency of the figures indicate a continuing classicism. This compositional pattern is repeated with little variation on later hun ...   more details
