Carillon de Westminster , Opus 54 No.6, is a piece written for organ music organ by France French composer and organist Louis Vierne . It constitutes the sixth piece in the third suite of Vierne s four suite set 24 pieces de fantaisie , first published in 1927. Carillon de Westminster is in the key of D major, and is in Compound meter music compound Triple metre triple time . Origin and Inspiration As indicated by the title, Carillon de Westminster is a fantasia on the Westminster Quarters Westminster chimes , played from the Clock Tower, Palace of Westminster , since 1858. The chimes play four notes in the key of E major, G , F , E, and B in various patterns every fifteen minutes. Vierne s friend Henry Willis not Henry Willis different generation hummed the tune for the composer upon Vierne s request apparently, either Willis hummed the tune incorrectly or Vierne misheard his friend upon transcription. Vierne misquoted the second quarter of the chimes. Instead of jumping up a third from the tonic, dropping down a whole step, and landing on the fifth, Vierne s version moves up in whole steps to the third before moving down to the fifth. Vierne then stays on the fifth, leaps to the second, then third note of the scale and ends on the tonic. There is debate among musicologists as to whether or not this rumor is true, or if Vierne altered the melody to suit his own purpose. Performance Vierne first performed Carillon de Westminster at Notre Dame de Paris Notre Dame, Paris on November 29, 1929 for the ending of Forty Hours at the cathedral. The piece was an instant success. Vierne s student, Henri Doyen, observed that Everyone...waited quietly until the end, and a number of people ... of Carillon de Westminster at Notre Dame, breath between phrases would have to be longer .... It is affiliated with Hockey Manitoba , the provincial branch of Hockey Canada . History The league was created in 2003 on the premise that local teams should have local players. The existing senior league at the time, the Hanover Tache Hockey League, included a large number of imported players. During it s first season, the CSHL s first season was as an outlaw league and did not have accreditation from Hockey Manitoba. Three teams competed that season, the Mitchell Mohawks, Ste. The league doubled to six teams, with the Steinbach Huskies , Grunthal Redwings, and St. Adolphe Hawks being accepted. Mitchell once again won the championship. Prior to the third season, the rival HTHL folded, and two teams joined the CSHL the La Broquerie Habs and St. Malo Warriors. This brought the league total of teams to eight. Image BYUclarillon.jpg right thumb 150px The BYU Centennial Carillon stands at the north end of campus The BYU Centennial Carillon is a carillon on the campus of Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah. The bell tower was erected in 1975 to commemorate the one hundredth anniversary of the school s founding. Built in a simple, modern style designed by architect Fred L. Markham , it stands 97 feet tall and contains 52 bells. The bells range in size from 25  lbs to 4,730  lbs. The carillon tolls a tune based on the hymn Come, Come, Ye Saints, followed by the hour, and tolls a chime on the half hour. The hour and half hour strikes are controlled by an automated system. Carilloneurs may also play the instrument by means of a keyboard located directly below the belfry, in a small room reached by a spiral staircase that ascends through the center of the tower. Brigham Young University is owned by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter day Saints , and its carillon is the only such instrument the church owns, anywhere in the world. Very rarely do LDS churches feature belltowers, and the only temple to contain even a single bell is the Nauvoo Temple . Today the chapel is used for ecumenical worship services, weddings, guest speakers, musical programs, and occasional film screenings. It occupies a full block and can seat 1700 people. The woodcarvings that adorn the organ and South balcony were created by Alois Lang , a Master Woodcarver at the American Seating Co., and one of the artists responsible for bringing the medieval art of ecclesiastical carving back to life.
