He graduated from the University of Rostock in 1872, and for the next three years was Prosector at Rostock under Friedrich Sigmund Merkel 1845 1919 . In 1875 he was an assistant to Franz K nig surgeon Franz K nig 1832 1910 in G ttingen , where he was habilitated for surgery in 1877. In the ensuing years he studied surgery with Bernhard von Langenbeck 1810 1887 and Heinrich Adolf von Bardeleben 1819 1895 , and in 1881 became chief physician of the surgical department at the St dtisches Krankenhaus in Aachen . In 1888 he became director of the surgical clinic at the University of Jena . Riedel was a pioneer in the surgical treatment of appendicitis and cholecystitis , and in 1888 is credited with performing the first choledochoduodenostomy anastomosis of the common bile duct to the duodenum . His name is lent to the following medical eponyms Riedel thyroiditis sometimes called ligneous thyroiditis , invasive fibrous thyroiditis or struma fibromatosis An uncommon thyroid disease in which the thyroid gland is replaced by extensive fibrosis. Blume Friedrich Blume 5 January 1893, Schl chtern , Hesse Nassau 22 November 1975 was professor of Musicology in University of Kiel Kiel University from 1938 1958. He was a student in Munich , Berlin and Leipzig , and taught in the last two of these for some years before being called to the chair in Kiel. His early studies were on Lutheran church music, including several books on J.S. Bach , but broadened his interests considerably later. Among his prominent works were chief editor of the collected Michael Praetorius Praetorious edition, and he also edited the important Ernst Eulenburg musical editions Eulenburg scores of the major Mozart Piano Concertos . From 1949 he was involved in the planning and writing of Musik in Geschichte und Gegenwart Die Musik in Geschichte und Gegenwart . Coincidentally he died within a few weeks of another prominent Mozart musicologist, Cuthbert Girdlestone , and was thus almost his exact contemporary.
