Members use the initials RP after their names. History The RoyalSociety of Portrait Painters was founded in 1891 by 24 artists who were dissatisfied with the selection policies of the Royal Academy for its annual exhibition in London. They formed themselves, as the Society of Portrait Painters, into a new body to be concerned solely with portrait painting. The Society was, and is, formed of members elected, on the basis of the quality of their work, by existing members. Members have an automatic right to display paintings at the annual exhibition, but most of the exhibits are selected, in addition, from non members of the society who submit their best recent portrait work for show. The Royal Botanic Society was a learned society founded in 1839. Its purpose was to promote botany in all its branches, and its applications. Soon after it was established, it leased the grounds within the Inner Circle in Regent s Park , London for use as an experimental garden. The garden was open to members and their guests and also to the general public for a fee on certain days of the week. It included large palm houses and a water lily house. In the summer, flowershows, fetes, and other entertainments were held there. In 1932 it failed to secure a renewal of the lease, and the Society was dissolved. Its surviving record were deposited in the St. Marylebone Public Library. The site became Queen Mary s Gardens , which is run by the Royal Parks Agency , and is fully open to the general public without charge as part of Regent s Park. The Royal National Rose Society is dedicated to the cultivation and appreciation of rose s. It was founded in 1876 and is based in St Albans in England . It is a membership organisation, with members drawn from professional and amateur gardeners and horticultural businesses in the United Kingdom and around the world. A key function of the Society is to conduct trials for new breeds of roses from all over the world. The International Merit Trials held at the Gardens of the Rose for both amateur and professional breeders are renowned worldwide. Where possible the Society provides help with any rose related problems, from finding a specific rose through to identifying roses, as well as providing general and specific rose care advice. It also holds probably the world s most comprehensive rose library, with books dating back to the early 1900s. This facility provides a useful resource for both members and many affiliated learning institutions throughout the world. The Society publishes a quarterly journal called The Rose . The yearly publication The Rose Annual was revived in 2005 but has not been printed since 2007.
