  1. Copperfields Mine

Copperfields Mine , originally known as Temagami Mine , is an abandoned underground and surface mine on Temagami Island in Lake Temagami that opened in 1954 in a sulfide ore body. Situated in Phyllis Township , the mine produced 34,000,000 dollars Canadian with 80 million pounds of copper , 230,028 ounces of silver and 13,271 ounces of gold . ref cite journal author year title Ground Geophysical Surveys Niemetz Property journal id Afri 31M04SW2038 ref It was considered to Mining mine the purest copper ore in Canada . The mine closed in 1972 and is now flood ed by water . Ruins of the Copperfields mill are present as fountains. It is possible to find ore s and mineral s in the scrap heaps of the old mine such as chalcopyrite , pyrite , bornite , malachite , dolomite , hessite , merenskyite , millerite , palladium , quartz and other minerals. The Lake Temagami Access Road was created to ship ore from the mine site. Copper nickel mineralization at the mine is associated with semi massive to disseminated pyrite at the lower contact between altered gabbro and rhyolite of the Temagami greenstone belt . The gabbro is steeply Strike and dip dipping , approximately 250 m thick and has a strike extent of at least 5  km. The intensity of mineralization varies greatly but is present over most of the defined strike length of the gabbro. Copper is associated with chalcopyrite. Nickel is associated with millerite, gersdorffite , linnaeite and cobalt nickel sulfarsenides. 1. Melaconite

Melaconite is a mineral consisting of cupric oxide , CuO. It is known also as black copper ore. In appearance it is strikingly different from cuprite or red copper ore, which is cuprous oxide . Crystals are rare they belong to the monoclinic , or possibly to the anorthic system , and have the form of thin triangular or hexagonal scales with a steel grey color and brilliant metallic lustre. More often, the mineral is massive, earthy or pulverulent, and has a dull iron black color. Hence the name melaconite , from the Greek , black and, , dust, which was originally given by Fran ois Sulpice Beudant F. S. Beudant in 1832 in the form melaconise . The crystallized Vesuvius Vesuvian mineral was later named tenorite , a name commonly adopted for the species. The hardness of the crystals is 3.4, but the earthy and powdery forms readily soil the fingers the specific gravity is 5.9. Crystals have been found only at Mt Vesuvius, where they encrust lava , and in Cornwall . The other forms of the mineral, however, are common in copper mines, and have resulted by the alteration of chalcocite , chalcopyrite and other copper ores, on which they often form a superficial coating. 1. Cementation (metallurgy)

Cementation is a type of Precipitation chemistry precipitation , a heterogeneous process in which ion s are reduced to zero valence chemistry valence at a solid metallic interface. The process is often used to refine Leaching metallurgy leach solutions. Cementation of copper is a common example. Copper ions in solution, often from a ore leaching process, are precipitated out of solution in the presence on solid iron. The iron oxidizes, and the copper ions are reduced through the transfer of electrons. The reaction is spontaneous because copper is higher on the galvanic series than iron. Kipushi is part of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Sakania Kipushi . Kipushi Mine The Kipushi Mine formerly Prince L opold Mine produces copper , lead and zinc . Ore occurs in open spaces and collapse breccia s along a fault zone. The primary zinc rich ore body contains the minerals sphalerite , galena , pyrite , and arsenopyrite , accompanied by renierite , and some germanite and gallite. These minerals were overprinted by a formation of mostly copper rich minerals, including cobalt bearing chalcopyrite , and germanium and silver bearing bornite , plus molybdenite . The ore body is estimated to have contained 70 million tonnes of ore, with an average of 4.8 Cu, 8.8 Zn and 0.5 Pb. From 1925 to 1986 the mine at Kipushi produced 3.8 million tonnes of copper, 5.9 million tonnes of zinc, 0.4 million tonnes of lead, 45,000 tonnes of cadmium , and 120 tonnes of germanium , plus other elements. The ore deposit was discovered in 1793, but mining did not start until 1809. Open pit mining and from 1886 underground mining was conducted. The mine produced up to 8,500,000 lbs. of copper 1954 and was closed in 1957. Due to acid mine drainage the west branch of the Ompompanoosuc River was polluted. Since 2000 the United States Environmental Protection Agency Environmental Protection Agency EPA and the Vermont Agency of Natural Resources have been developing a plan to clean up the area. Geology The ore deposits at the Elizabeth Mine are hosted in the strongly deformed Devonian Guile Mountain Formation a grey to dark grey mica schist . Ore deposits are localized in zones of high permeability associated with deformation that occurred during the Acadian Orogeny . The ore body is principally a massive sulfide deposit consisting primarily of pyrrhotite and chalcopyrite .
