Unreferenced auto yes date December 2009 In physics , polarity is a description of an attribute, typically a binary attribute one with two values , or a Euclidean vector vector a direction . For example An electric charge has a polarity of either positive or negative. A battery contains polarity, with the two and terminals. Similar to electric charge, the energy flows from the positive terminal, through the battery, to the negative terminal, and exits the dry cell. A voltage has a polarity, in that it could be positive or negative with respect to some other voltage, such as the one at the other end of a battery electricity battery or electric circuit . A magnet has a polarity, in that one end is the north and the other is the south . The Spin physics spin of an entity in quantum mechanics has a polarity positive or negative. Polarized light has waves which all line up in the same direction. Chemicalpolarity is a feature of chemical bond s, where two different atom s in the same molecule have different electronegativity . As a result, the electrons in the bond are not shared equally by the two atoms. This causes an asymmetrical polar electric field. Molecular covalent bond s can be described as polar or nonpolar. A Polarity Chron , or chron, is a term used in stratigraphy a branch of geology to name the time interval represented by a magnetostratigraphic polarity unit. It represents a certain time period in geologic history where the Earth s magnetic field was in a normal and reversed position. Chrons are numbered in order starting from today and increasing in number into the past. As well as a number, each chron is divided into two parts, labelled n and r , thereby showing the position of the field s polarity. A chron is the time equivalent to a Chronozone or a polarity zone. File Seismic polarity reversal.png thumb Diagram showing the acoustic relationship that results in a seismic polarity reversal. In reflection seismology , a polarity reversal is a local amplitude seismic attribute anomaly that can indicate the presence of hydrocarbons and is therefore known as a direct hydrocarbon indicator . It primarily results from the change in polarity of the seismic response when a shale with a lower acoustic impedance overlies a brine saturated zone with a high acoustic impedance , that becomes invaded with an oil gas sand with the lowest acoustic impedance of the three . This changes the acoustic impedance contrast from an increase to a decrease, resulting in the polarity of the seismic response being reversed as per the normal convention adopted by the SEG . Occurrence For a polarity reversal to occur, the shale has to have a lower acoustic impedance than the water sand and both are required to have a higher acoustic impedance than the oil gas sand. This is the intermediate situation, that occurs during sediment compaction with depth, between the acoustic impedance relationship required for a bright spot and the acoustic impedance relationship required for a dim spot . Image AC adaptor polarity.png thumbnail right Diagram showing positive tip polarity on the left and negative tip polarity on the right. To read diagram The center positive drawing on the left indicates that the center tip of the output plug is positive and the barrel of the output plug is negative . Some multi adaptors use tip to indicate the center, but include no explanation that tip is used to mean center. Many electrical devices use direct current DC power, often provided by a AC alternating current to DC adapter , also known as a wall wart or power brick. The polarity of the adapter cord must match the polarity of the device, meaning that the positive contact of the plug must mate with the positive contact in the receptacle, and the negative plug contact must mate with the negative receptacle contact. Since there is no standardization of these plugs, a polarity symbol is printed on the case indicating which type of plug is needed. The commonly used symbol denoting the polarity of a device or adapter consists of a black dot with a line leading to the right and a broken circle like the letter C surrounding the dot and with a line leading to the left. At the ends of the lines leading right and left are found a plus sign , meaning positive, and a minus sign , meaning negative. The symbol connected to the dot usually the symbol found to the right denotes the polarity of the device or adapter. Thus a device with a plus sign at the end of the line leading from the center dot is said to have positive polarity and requires an adapter that has positive polarity. A device with a minus sign at the end of the line leading from the center dot has negative polarity and requires an adapter of negative polarity. Centre Positive. Electrical polarity positive and negative is present in every electrical circuit . Electron s flow from the negative pole to the positive pole. In a direct current DC circuit, one pole is always negative, the other pole is always positive and the electrons flow in one direction only. In an alternating current AC circuit the two poles alternate between negative and positive and the direction of the electron flow continually reverses. Positive and negative In DC circuits, the positive pole is usually marked red or and the negative pole is usually marked black or , but other color schemes are sometimes used in automotive and telecommunications systems. On a car battery , the positive pole is fatter, having a larger diameter than the negative pole. In AC systems which are at no point connected to earth unlike domestic mains wiring where the neutral is commonly earthed at substations and generators polarity is not important as the two wires alternate polarity many times per second. Ground earth Modern automobile cars have a negative earth electrical system. In this case the negative terminal of the battery is bonded to the vehicle s chassis the metallic body work and the positive terminal provides the live wire to the various systems. However, some older cars were built with a positive earth electrical system, in this case the positive terminal of the battery is bonded to the chassis and the negative terminal for the live. Polarity is a board game that requires strategic thinking and dexterity to control hovering magnet ic discs. Polarity was invented in 1985 by Canadian artist and designer Douglas Seaton. It was first published in 1986 in games 1986 . The game has had a tumultuous past, with its rights changing hands several times over the past 2 decades. The game has been published by Telemotion Technologies, Irwin Toy, briefly with Mattel and most recently by Temple Games . The game ships in a canvas sleeve and include the magnets, the board, and a paper rulebook. An unrelated game of the same name is published by a company called Mindwalk Company . The purpose of the game is to gain points by forming towers of discs. The playing pieces are magnets shaped like discs, with one side white and the other black, north and south respectively. They are identical with the exception of a neutral central disc which is coloured red. Play starts with one player tossing the central red disc in order to determine which player plays with which colour magnetic polarity. Each player then lays 5 foundation discs of their colour starting with the white player. Each disc can be placed on the playing area with no limitation other than to be inside the external circle and not touching the red disc. Image Polaritypieces.jpg thumb right Two leaners that have been played off a tower Play then proceeds by placing further discs within the playing area, balanced, leaning, on the magnetic fields of preceding pieces. NOTOC In linguistics , a polarity item is a lexical unit that can appear only in the environment of a certain licensing context. Polarity items are defined as Negative Polarity Items NPIs or Positive Polarity items PPIs . Simple Negation linguistics negation creates a licensing context for most NPIs, while affirmation affirmative statements license most PPIs. To illustrate, consider these sentences using NPIs at all or any . I didn t like the film at all I liked the film at all John doesn t have any potatoes John has any potatoes. In both pairs, the NPIs are licensed by negation. To illustrate a PPI, consider the word somewhat in the following pair John liked it somewhat. John didn t like it somewhat. Somewhat is licensed by the affirmative environment, but it is forbidden anti licensed by the negative environment Baker 1970 . Baker also noticed that double negative double negation may provide an acceptable context for positive polarity items I can t believe you don t fancy her somewhat. However, licensing contexts can take many forms besides simple negation affirmation. To complicate matters, polarity items appear to be highly idiosyncratic, each with its own set of licensing contexts. One source date September 2010 Cell polarity is a fundamental feature of many types of cell biology cell s. Epithelial cells are one example of a polarized cell type, featuring distinct apical , lateral and basal plasma membrane domains. Epithelial cells connect to one another via their lateral membranes to form epithelia epithelial sheets that line cavities and surfaces throughout the animal body. Each plasma membrane domain has a distinct protein composition, giving them distinct properties and allowing directional transport of molecules across the epithelial sheet. How epithelial cells generate and maintain polarity remains unclear, but certain molecules have been found to play a key role. Refimprove date October 2006 File Oocyte Poles.jpg thumb An oocyte with poles depicted In developmental biology , a blastula embryo is divided into two hemispheres the animal pole and the vegetal pole . The animal pole consists of small cells that divide rapidly, in contrast with the vegetal pole below it. The animal pole draws its name from its liveliness relative to the slowly developing vegetal pole. In some cases, the animal pole is thought to differentiate into the later embryo itself, forming the three primary germ layers and participating in gastrulation . The vegetal pole contains large yolky cells that divide very slowly, in contrast with the animal pole above it. The vegetal pole draws its name from its inactivity relative to the lively animal pole. In some cases, the vegetal pole is thought to differentiate into the extraembryonic membranes that protect and nourish the developing embryo, such as the placenta in mammals and the chorion in birds. In frog, Xenopus laevis pigment pattern provides the oocyte with features of radially symmetrical body with a distinct polarity. The animal hemisphere is dark brown, and the vegetal hemisphere is only weakly pigmented. The axis of symmetry passes through on one side the animal pole, and on the other side the vegetal pole. The two hemispheres are separated by an unpigmented equatorial belt. Polarity has a major influence on the mergence of the embryonic structures. In fact, the axis polarity serves as one coordinate of geometrical system in which early embryogenesis is organised. ref P. Hausen, M. Special negative and affirmative items are often found in answers to questions. In English, these are Yes and no no and yes respectively, in French non and oui , and Swedish nej and ja . In addition to this, some languages have a distinct form for a positive answer to a negative question, such as French si and Swedish jo . Negative In many languages, rather than inflecting the verb, negation is expressed by adding a grammatical particle particle before the verb phrase, as in Spanish language Spanish No est en casa or after it, as in archaic and dialectal English language English you remember not or Dutch language Dutch Ik zie hem niet or German language German Ich schlafe nicht or Swedish Language Swedish han hoppade inte or both, as in French language French Je ne sais pas or Afrikaans Hy kan nie Afrikaans praat nie .
