Unreferenced date December 2009 Image Double circulatory system.jpg thumb 150px Right A diagram showing the basic structure of a double circulatorysystem. In a first order circulatory circuit, blood is pumped to the lung s, thus acquiring oxygen while simultaneously releasing carbon dioxide . Fully oxygenated blood then enters the second order circuit, going to the brain and body. The second order systemic output blood is selectively deoxygenated by the needs of the peripheral organs, returning once again to the heart . The double circulatorysystem of blood flow references two distinct and separate systems. This distinction is shared by most vertebrates to varying degrees to include amphibia ns, bird s and mammal s including human s. In contrast, Fish anatomy fish have a single circulation system because they lack lungs. Most animals living above the water require a double circulatorysystem to allow the added benefit of direct oxygenation from a developed pulmonary circuit. As in other mollusc s, the circulatorysystem of gastropod s is open circulatorysystem open , with the fluid, or haemolymph , flowing through Sinus anatomy sinuses and bathing the tissues directly. The haemolymph typically contains haemocyanin , and is blue in colour. Circulation The heart is muscular and located in the anterior part of the viscera l mass. In the great majority of species, it has two chambers an atrium heart auricle , which receives haemolymph from the gill or lung , and a ventricle heart ventricle , which pumps it into the aorta . However, some primitive gastropods possess two gills, each supplying its own auricle, so that their heart has three chambers. The aorta is relatively short, and soon divides into two main vessels, one supplying the visceral mass, and the other supplying the head and foot. In some groups, these two vessels arise directly from the heart, so that the animal may be said to have two aortas. These two vessels in turn divide into many finer vessels throughout the body, and deliver haemolymph to open arterial sinuses where it bathes and oxygenates the tissues. De oxygenated haemolymph drains into a large venous sinus within the head and foot, which contains the nephridium , an excretory organ with a function similar to that of the vertebrate kidney . From here it passes into vessels within the gill, or into the capillary network of the pulmonate lung, before returning to the heart. In some genera, such as the large marine snail Busycon , the main anterior artery which supplies the head and foot includes an enlarged muscular region. This structure ... of the head. Infobox disease Name Cardiovascular collapse ICD10 ICD10 R 57 9 r50 A circulatory collapse is defined as a general or specific failure of the Circulatorysystem circulation , either cardiac or peripheral in nature. A common cause of this could be Shock circulatory shock ref http www.spaceref.com iss medical 4044.shock.circ.collapse.em.pdf ref or Physical trauma trauma from injury or surgery ref http www.plosone.org article info doi 2F10.1371 2Fjournal.pone.0001605 pone.0001605 Heckbert1 ref . A general failure is one that occurs across a wide range of locations in the body, such as systemic shock after the loss of a large amount of blood collapsing all the circulatory systems in the legs. A specific failure can be traced to a particular point, such as a clot. Cardiac circulatory collapse affects the vessels of the heart such as the aorta and is almost always fatal. It is sometimes referred to as acute circulatory failure. Peripheral circulatory collapse involves outlying arteries and veins in the body and can result in gangrene, organ failure or other serious complications. This form is sometimes called peripheral vascular failure, shock or peripheral vascular shutdown. Effects The effects of a circulatory collapse vary based on the type of collapse it is. Peripheral collapses usually involve abnormally low blood pressure and result in collapsed arteries and or veins, leading to oxygen deprivation to tissues, organs, and limbs. Acute collapse can result from heart failure and results in collapse of the primary vessels of the heart collapsing, perhaps combined with cardiac arrest . Anastomoses between arteries and between veins result in a multitude of arteries and veins , respectively, serving the same volume of tissue. Deep Hypothermic Circulatory Arrest DHCA is a surgical technique that involves cooling the body of the patient and stopping blood circulation. It is used in cardiac surgery to allow operation on the aortic arch and in neurosurgery to repair some brain aneurysm s. The procedure requires keeping the patient in a state of hibernation at 12 18 degrees Celsius with no breathing, heartbeat, or brain activity for up to one hour. Blood is drained from the body to eliminate blood pressure. The patient is considered Clinical death clinically dead during the operation. Neurosurgery Surgical management of giant cerebral aneurysms remains a major technical challenge for modern neurosurgeons. Endovascular approaches for giant aneurysms does not provide an acceptable alternative to direct surgical approaches. The use of deep hypothermic circulatory arrest as an adjunct during clipping of complex giant aneurysms shows promise as a treatment for otherwise incurable lesions.
