Wagner , 1910 The deepwater cisco Coregonus johannae was one of the largest Cisco fish ciscoes in the Great Lakes . Its average length was 30cm 12 inches and it was about 1.0 kilogram 2.2 pounds in weight. Occurring only in Lakes Lake Huron Huron and Lake Michigan Michigan , and inhabited waters between 50 and 150 metres deep, it was difficult to distinguish from other ciscoes and was possibly the same species as the shortjaw cisco Coregonus zenithicus . The deepwater cisco was distinguished by usually having fewer than 33 gill rakers, relatively long pectoral fins, and unpigmented jaws. It was a silvery colour with a pink or purple lustre and a green or blue back. It spawned in August and September, earlier than most other ciscoes and, because of its large size, the deepwater Cisco was heavily fished commercially. The last specimens of deepwater ciscoes were recorded in Lake Huron in 1952 and Lake Michigan in 1951. The main reasons for its extinction were competition from the invasive alewife and predation by the introduced sea lamprey . This silvery, deep bodied fish with black fins , large eyes, a blunt snout and a terminal mouth, is one of the largest forms of cisco fish ciscoes . The blackfin cisco used to inhabit the Great Lakes of North America until recently, but has been reported to have gone extinct . Description It is a dark silvery color, with a dark green to black back, and pink or purple on the sides the outer half of the fins is black. Blackfin ciscoes measure up to 510 mm 21 inches in length . Its preferred habitat is cold lakes at depths of up to 180 metres. There is great doubt whether the Coregonus nigripinnis was an independent species separate from Coregonus artedi lake herring or just an ecomophotype. as has also been argued for other cisco forms in the Great Lakes area. Decline The decline of the species has been largely caused by overfishing and predation from the invading sea lamprey . The introduced alewife Alosa pseudoharengus and rainbow smelt Osmerus mordax are also aggressive predators of juveniles. Blackfin ciscoes were commercially fished until the early 1900s when declining stocks made the fishery uneconomic. Current threats to the only remaining population include commercial fishing, predation by rainbow smelt and interbreeding with lake herring Coregonus artedi . The blackfin cisco was last seen in Lake Michigan in 1969 and in Lake Huron in 1960. The latest was seen in 2006 in Long Lake near Thunder Bay . Cisco HDLC also known as cHDLC is an extension to the High Level Data Link Control network protocol created by Cisco Systems, Inc . HDLC is a bit oriented synchronous data link layer Communications protocol protocol that was originally developed by the International Organization for Standardization ISO . Often described as being a proprietary extension, the workings of cHDLC have in fact been openly and widely distributed, and the protocol has been implemented by many different network equipment vendors. Framing Cisco HDLC Data frame frames make use of an alternative framing structure to the standard ISO HDLC . One of the primary reasons for the creation of cHDLC was to address the HDLC protocol s inability to provide multi protocol support. Thus, cHDLC frames contain a field for identifying the network protocol being encapsulated. Structure cHDLC frame structure The following table describes the make up of a cHDLC frame on the wire. class wikitable Address Control Protocol Code Information Frame Check Sequence FCS Flag 8 bits 8 bits 16 bits Variable length, 0 or more bits, in multiples of 8 16 bits 8 bits The Address field is used to specify the type of packet contained in the cHDLC frame 0x0F for Unicast and 0x8F for Broadcast packets. It is native to the Great Lakes , formerly occurring in Lake Huron Lakes Huron , Lake Michigan Michigan , and Lake Ontario Ontario in Canada and the United States . The last reported population was restricted to Georgian Bay off Lake Huron in Canada. Reaching a maximum recorded length of 36  cm 14  in and a maximum recorded weight of 540  gramme g 1  pound mass lb 3 ounce oz , the shortnose cisco is distinguished from the other Coregonus whitefishes by its thicker body nearly circular in cross section , short head the source of the fish s common name , and small eye. Like many Coregonus species, the shortnose cisco is poorly understood, and little is known about its breeding or life cycle except that it spawns in the spring at the lake bottom the oldest specimen collected was eight years of age. The fish feeds on crustacean s, mollusc s, and zooplankton . The IUCN considers C. reighardi to be Critically Endangered on the basis of plummeting population, caused by environmental degradation. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the Ontario Province of Ontario s Ministry of Natural Resources, however, consider the species already extinct , on the basis that no specimen has been collected since 1985.
