He was born in Cleveland, Ohio , the only child of second generation Austrian parents who owned a local meat company. Kolb started out as one half of a vaudeville comedy team, Kolb and Dill, with Max Dill . They styled their act on the famous team Weber and Fields . In addition to their stage work, they appeared in a series of film movie short film shorts and a feature length movie in 1917. Afterwards, Kolb made a return to vaudeville, and he only returned to the movies in the late 1930s. He became famous for portraying the same type of character in many movies, namely a politician or businessman. Formative years Born in Adams County, Ohio Adams County , Ohio to Samuel C. and Margeret Maggie Woods, Clarence was raised in both eastern Kansas and Carthage, Missouri Carthage in southwest Missouri . Note that some sources list him as H. Clarence Woods, but multiple US Census and local Census records clearly list him as Clarence H. Woods, and his WWI Draft card shows him simply as Clarence Woods. The 1895 Kansas Census shows the family in Girard, Kansas . His father was a blacksmith , and he had two younger brothers and two younger sisters. Clarence was in the midst of a hotbed of ragtime as he grew up. He took piano lessons from the same teacher as James Scott musician James Scott , but whether they knew each other well is not known for certain.
