Strauss was educated by Paul Tortelier and Maurice Gendron at the Conservatoire de Paris , where he won first prizes in cello and in chamber music , before continuing his studies at Yale University with Aldo Parisot . In 1980, he was appointed principal solo cello of the Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France and began teaching his own regular cello class at the Paris Conservatoire in 1987. He has also taught in the Netherlands and sat on the juries on many international music competitions. Strauss has collaborated with many important contemporary classical music contemporary classical composer s, including Maurice B jart , Luciano Berio , Pierre Boulez , Henri Dutilleux , Philippe Hersant , and Krzysztof Penderecki , and is the dedicatee of a number of their works. He has also worked for film cinema with Jean Luc Godard and for musical theatre in Avignon .     As of July 18, 2011 Jon C. Strauss is the Interim President of Manhattanville College in Purchase, NY. He replaced Molly Easo Smith, who sat as the eleventh president of the College. Previously, Dr. Strauss was the interim dean of engineering at Texas Tech University , and is known as the father of Responsibility Center Management RCM which he helped to develop at the University of Pennsylvania. He is a former member and current consultant of the National Science Board . Before his time at Tech, he served as President of the Bainbridge Graduate Institute in 2008 2009. He accepted this appointment from former President and BGI Co Founder Gifford Pinchot III. Strauss was the fourth president of Harvey Mudd College , serving in that position from March 1997 to June 2006. Prior to Harvey Mudd, he was the Chief Financial Officer of Howard Hughes Medical Institute Strauss also served as the thirteenth president of Worcester Polytechnic Institute from 1985 to 1994.
