Strauss was educated by Paul Tortelier and Maurice Gendron at the Conservatoire de Paris , where he won first prizes in cello and in chamber music , before continuing his studies at Yale University with Aldo Parisot . In 1980, he was appointed principal solo cello of the Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France and began teaching his own regular cello class at the Paris Conservatoire in 1987. He has also taught in the Netherlands and sat on the juries on many international music competitions. As of July 18, 2011 Jon C. Strauss is the Interim President of Manhattanville College in Purchase, NY. He replaced Molly Easo Smith, who sat as the eleventh president of the College. Previously, Dr. Strauss was the interim dean of engineering at Texas Tech University , and is known as the father of Responsibility Center Management RCM which he helped to develop at the University of Pennsylvania. He is a former member and current consultant of the National Science Board . Before his time at Tech, he served as President of the Bainbridge Graduate Institute in 2008 2009. He accepted this appointment from former President and BGI Co Founder Gifford Pinchot III. Strauss was the fourth president of Harvey Mudd College , serving in that position from March 1997 to June 2006. These included the smoking Camel cigarette Camel sign, which waft ed giant smoke rings over the Square the Bond Clothing Stores display, a block long extravaganza with a perpetual waterfall and the high neon north Square spectaculars created for Canadian Club and Admiral Television. For almost a century, Artkraft Strauss was also responsible for the annual midnight Times Square Ball ball drop that signaled the new year s arrival. Artkraft Strauss began as Strauss Signs. Founded in 1897 by artisan Benjamin Strauss, the company furnished New York s retailers with posters and painted show cards. By the teens and 20s, Strauss signs, applying the innovative methods of a Russian immigrant named Jacob Starr , had become the Square s principal builder of theater marquees and entertainment displays, including the original marquee for the New Amsterdam Theatre . In the 1920s Starr left Strauss to start his own engineering firm in association with the Artkraft Company of Lima, Ohio, a leading maker of neon lighting, a newly minted technology.
