The Clementine Hall is a hall of the Apostolic Palace near St. Peter s Basilica in Vatican City . It was established in the 16th century by Pope Clement VIII in honor of Pope Clement I , the third successor of St. Peter . The Clementine Hall is covered in Renaissance fresco es and valuable works of art . It is used by the pope as a reception room and in some cases, site of various ceremonies and rituals. The Clementine Hall is the chamber in which the body of the pope lies for private visitation by officials of the Vatican upon death, like that most recently of the funeral of Pope John Paul II . The pope is then traditionally moved from the Clementine Hall and ceremonially carried across St. Peter s Square to St. Peter s Basilica or the Basilica of San Giovanni in Laterano . Frescos Over the doors appears the fresco The Martyrdom of Pope Clement I St. Clement by the Dutch painter Paul Brill . On the opposite wall appear the frescos The Baptism of St. Clement by Italian painters Cherubino Alberti and Baldassare Croce , and an Allegory of Art and Science by Giovanni Alberti Giovanni and Cherubino Alberti. The friezes frieze on the side walls depict allegories of the cardinal virtues by Alberti and Croce and the theological virtues, on the opposite wall, by the same artists. On the ceiling is The Apotheosis of St. Clement by Giovanni Alberti . Orphan date February 2009 Lake Clementine is a man made lake at an elevation of 700 on the North Fork American River Canyon below the picturesque gold rush era town of Auburn, California Auburn elev. 1200 in northern California . It was created in 1939 when North Fork Dam, a 150 debris dam, was completed by the Army Corps of Engineers for the purpose of containing gold mining debris washing downriver. It is open to boat traffic, a waterskiing and wakeboarding spot during the summer. However, many days the lake is closed to wakeboarding so that the lake may be quietly enjoyed for kayaks, rowing, and fishing. It features steep forested canyon walls and contains several large high quality limestone deposits, one large vertical outcropping of which is known as Robbers Roost, and offers climbing and caving opportunities for the adventurous. A popular hiking, running, and mountain biking trail courses from the dam area, continues downstream below the 780 high Foresthill Bridge, linking Lake Clementine to the North and Middle Forks American River Confluence area below the dam. The trail also connects to a large network hiking, running, and mountain biking trail system stretching eastward into the Sierra Nevada mountain range near Lake Tahoe. Because the dam is designed so that the river flows over its top, a waterfall is created that grows impressively large in winter and spring when rain and snowmelt cause high river flows. Orphan date February 2009 Ellen Clementine Howarth born Ellen Clementine Doran in Cooperstown, New York , May 17, 1827, died Trenton, New Jersey Trenton , New Jersey , December 23, 1899 , was an American poet. The daughter of a Calico textile calico printer, and employed as a factory worker at the age of seven, she married Joseph Howarth, in the same occupation. She lived at Trenton, New Jersey in extremely reduced circumstances until friends secured her a comfortable subsistence. She authored a volume of poems in 1864, The Wind Harp and Other Poems , and also wrote a song Tis but a Little Faded Flower . Her later work, Poems 1867 , was edited by Richard Watson Gilder . Howarth said her poems came to her as she did housework, and she only wrote them down when she considered them finished. They were initially published in newspapers in Trenton under the pen name Clementine , and then in magazines Richard Gilder helped her find markets for them. She wrote many poems in a few years, and then mostly ceased writing. ref New York Times , December 24, 1899, obituary ref References references Ellen Mackay Hutchinson and Arthur Stedman , http books.google.com books?id qnpBAAAAYAAJ&pg PA531 A Library of American Literature from the Earliest Settlement to the Present 1892 , v. 11, p. 531.
