File Spider Bridge.jpg 250px thumb right The Spider Bridge forms part of the Five Weirs Walk along the River Don, South Yorkshire River Don from Blonk Street, near the centre of Sheffield, eastwards to Meadowhall. The bridge is held in place by a lattice work of suspension and tensioning cables and sits over the waters of the Don and below the railway arches of the old Victoria Station, now long gone. The CobwebBridge , also known as Spider Bridge, is located in the city centre of Sheffield , South Yorkshire , England , near the disused Sheffield Victoria railway station .It was completed in 2002. Its design was the solution to a difficult problem how to pass the riverside cycle walkway Five Weirs Walk under the massive Wicker Arches viaduct and at the same time link one bank of the River Don to the other. Without the bridge, the footpath would have had to make a one mile detour. Designed by Sheffield City Council s Structures Section, the entire 100 metres long bridge is suspended on a web of steel cables secured to the underside of the Viaduct, hence the name. The theme is completed by large steel spiders concealing the lighting on the ceiling. The bridge is prone to vandalism , the wires forming the parapet have been stolen more than once. COBWEB is an incremental system for hierarchical conceptual clustering . COBWEB incrementally organizes observations into a classification tree . Each node in a classification tree represents a class concept and is labeled by a probabilistic concept that summarizes the attribute value distributions of objects classified under the node. This classification tree can be used to predict missing attributes or the class of a new object. There are four basic operations COBWEB employs in building the classification tree. Which operation is selected depends on the category utility of the classification achieved by applying it. The operations are Merging Two Nodes br Merging two nodes means replacing them by a node whose children is the union of the original nodes sets of children and which summarizes the attribute value distributions of all objects classified under them. Splitting a node br A node is split by replacing it with its children. Inserting a new node br A node is created corresponding to the object being inserted into the tree. Passing an object down the hierarchy br Effectively calling the COBWEB algorithm on the object and the subtree rooted in the node. Image LogisticCobwebChaos.gif thumb 500px right An animated cobweb diagram of the logistic map , showing chaos theory chaotic behaviour for most values of r 3.57. A cobweb plot , or Verhulst diagram is a visual tool used in the dynamical system s field of mathematics to investigate the qualitative behaviour of one dimensional iterated function s, such as the logistic map . Using a cobweb plot, it is possible to infer the long term status of an initial condition under repeated application of a map. Method For a given iterated function f   R     R , the plot consists of a diagonal x y line and a curve representing y f x . To plot the behaviour of a value math x 0 math , apply the following steps. Find the point on the function curve with an x coordinate of math x 0 math . This has the coordinates math x 0, f x 0 math . Plot horizontally across from this point to the diagonal line. This has the coordinates math f x 0 , f x 0 math . Plot vertically from the point on the diagonal to the function curve. This has the coordinates math f x 0 , f f x 0 math . Repeat from step 2 as required. Interpretation On the cobweb plot, a stable fixed point mathematics fixed point corresponds to an inward spiral, while an unstable fixed point is an outward one. It follows from the definition of a fixed point that these spirals will center at a point where the diagonal y x line crosses the function graph. A period 2 Orbit dynamics orbit is represented by a rectangle, while greater period cycles produce further, more complex closed loops. A chaos theory chaotic orbit would show a filled out area, indicating an infinite number of non repeating values. The cobweb model or cobweb theory is an economic model that explains why price s might be subject to periodic fluctuations in certain types of market s. It describes cyclical supply and demand in a market where the amount Production, costs, and pricing produced must be chosen before prices are observed.
