  1. Drafting tape

Unreferenced date December 2009 Drafting Tape , also known as the second most useful tape in the world Citation needed date July 2009 , is similar to duct tape in that is has a wide variety of uses, but differs in several key areas. Drafting tape is not nearly as strong as duct tape or Gaffer Tape it will break with minimal effort, and is not waterproof. Drafting tape is easily removable, even from delicate surfaces like paper. It does not leave a sticky residue when it is removed. This is the main reason engineers and architects use this kind of tape in their blueprint s. Drafting tape is also relatively low odour compared to other types of tape. Its odour is similar to electrical tape , but less rubbery and more papery. Many people find the odour pleasant, or at the very least, unobtrusive. Drafting tape is nearly identical to masking tape and painters tape , the main difference is width. Painters tape is the widest, averaging about 2 inches approx. 6.4  cm , while masking tape and drafting tape are less than half that width. While the obvious use of drafting tape is for drawing, drafting tape can also be used for label ing and hanging posters. Its neutral cream coloring goes well with many other colors, and it can be written on easily with any felt tipped marker. In addition, drafting tape costs less than conventional labels, and its low cost also makes it more forgiving of errors. 1. Drafting linen

From the late 19th century until the middle of the 20th century, drafting linen , also known as drafting cloth , was commonly used as an alternative to wood pulp and rag papers in creating technical drawing s. Its major benefits were considerable strength, especially in erasing and redrawing, durability in handling, and translucency for making multiple architectural reprography reprographic prints . Manufactured as an undyed muslin woven fabric, typically using cotton or linen fiber, the textile was highly starched and then calendering calendered to create a smooth surface for precise ink and graphite lines. Although drafting linen was most typically used in creating original drawings, it was occasionally used as the underlying support for blueprints and other similar reprographic processes. Drafting linen largely fell out of favor after the development of drafting film varying in chemical composition from cellulose acetate to polyester in the 1950s. 1. General Drafting

Unreferenced date November 2006 General Drafting Corporation of Convent Station, New Jersey , founded by Otto G. Lindberg, was one of the Big Three road map publishers from 1930 to 1970, along with Gousha H.M. Gousha and Rand McNally . Unlike the other two, General Drafting did not sell its maps to a variety of smaller customers, but was the exclusive publisher of maps for Standard Oil of New Jersey , later Esso and Exxon . When oil companies stopped providing free maps, General Drafting tried to expand into retail map production, and continued to make maps for Exxon to sell but its fortunes declined, and in 1992 it was purchased by Langenscheidt and absorbed into the American Map Company its state maps became the Travelvision lineup for that company. 1. Drafting water

Unreferenced date December 2009 Image Fire engine drafting.jpg thumb Fire engine drafting The term drafting water refers to the use of suction to move a liquid such as water from a vessel or body of water below the intake of a suction pump . A rural volunteer fire department fire department or farmer might draft water from a pond as the first step in moving the water elsewhere. A suction pump creates a partial vacuum a draft and the atmospheric pressure on the water s surface forces the water into the pump, usually via a rigid pipe sometimes called a dry hydrant or a semi rigid hard suction hose . Standard atmospheric pressure is 101 kPa 14.7  lbf in and that can only raise water to a theoretical maximum of 10.3 metres 33.9  ft . Depending on application, fire department pumps lift water 6 to 10 metres 20 to 30  ft . Image Hard suction end med strainer.jpg thumb left Medium diameter hard suction hose, with attached strainer, for use with wildland firefighting apparatus. To reduce drafting friction and obtain a larger flow or higher lift, a larger cross section of suction hose is employed. For example, using a 5  inch 127  mm hose, a pump that could lift 500 US gallons per minute 30 L s up 23 feet 7 m would only be able to lift the same amount of water 12.5 feet 4 m through a 3.5  inch 76  mm hose. Fire engines are often seen carrying two or three 10 foot 3 m lengths of suction hose, but the longer the lift, the lower the flow, for a fixed diameter suction hose and a given pump. Multiple relays could be used if the need arises, with a suction pump drafting up to 10 metres 30  ft , and discharging at great distances. It is also possible to use a gravity siphon to draft water for a small lift, and this technique is often used in forest fire suppression, where portable reservoir water reservoirs of 1,000 to 3,000 US gallons 5 to 10 m are filled ... 1. Beam compass

Refimprove date April 2010 A beam compass is a compass drafting compass with a beam and sliding sockets or cursors for drawing and dividing circles larger than those made by a regular pair of compasses. ref 1728 ref ref label 1728 1 The instrument can be as a whole, or made on the spot with individual sockets called trammel points and any suitable beam. Trammel points Trammels or trammel points are the sockets or cursors that, together with the beam, make up a beam compass. Their relatively small size makes them easy to store or transport. They consist of two separate metal pieces approx. 2.5 X 5 X 1 2 that are usually connected by a piece of wood, The wood timber is not included in the purchase of the trammel points. It can be ripped on a table saw. A lumber yard or woodworking store should have a piece readily available to fit the opening also ,metal, or pipe. They work like a scratch awl. Use As for any compass drafting compass , there are two uses. Scribing a circle Image Trammel points woodshop.jpg thumb 240px sharp point used to score a fine line in the birch plywood connected to each other by a piece of 3 4 X 3 8 mahogany The beam compass is used to scribe a circle . The radius can be adjusted by sliding the metal across the wood beam and locking it by turning a knob at the desired location. The threaded machine rod is similar to the Screw bolt . The only limitation is the rigidity of the wood being used. Longer pieces tend to get floppier depending on the species of wood used. Metal can be used as an alternative but also has length limitations. Trammel points score a precise cut out line with the sharp point of the rod. When the circular knob is turned, it micro adjusts the radius of the circle. The spring locks the mechanism at the precise desired location.
