History The precursor of the University of the Visual and Performing Arts was the Ceylon Technical College , established in 1893. Its Department of Arts and Aesthetics moved from Horton Place to Haywood College on 1 October 1949. The institution was renamed School of Art and awarded a diploma in Fine Arts after its six year course. On 2 July 1952, the institution was again renamed as the Government College of Fine Arts and began instruction in singing and acting.
