Ikarus is a type design and production software developed by URW company URW foundry, for converting existing typeface s and logos into digital format for use on computer driven printing, plotting and sign cutting devices. It was licensed by major foundries such as Agfa Compugraphic, Autologic, Berthold, ITC International Typeface Corporation , Letraset , Linotype, Monotype, Stempel, and others. Its IK format was convertible into diverse vendor representations, including Type3 and Type1 PostScript formats as well as the TrueType format by Apple and Microsoft. Ikarus uses a spline dn date February 2012 model of the outline shape of each character computing character within a typeface to give a fully scalable representation. The curve segments are essentially circle arcs, with tangent continuity maintained at joins. It is a very simple format to manually mark up. Being a vector curve based format, any rendering resolution can be attained by rasterisation with equal accuracy from one relatively small set of data. The Ikarus coordinates for a shape all fall on the outline of that shape as opposed to B zier curve s where control points can be inside or outside the outline . The functionality of Ikarus can be expanded using plug ins. History Originally invented by URW employee Dr Peter Karow , Ikarus German spelling of the mythical figure Icarus mythology Icarus got its name from the frequency with which it crashed in the early days of its development. It was designed to run on minicomputer s such as DEC VAX and later adapted to microcomputer s as they became increasingly powerful. Herb Lubalin devised the logo concept and its companion headline typeface, then he and Tom Carnase, a partner in Lubalin s design firm, worked together to transform the idea into a full fledged typeface. The condensed fonts were drawn by Ed Benguiat in 1974, and the obliques were designed by Andr G rtler , Erich Gschwind and Christian Mengelt in 1977. The original designs include one version for setting headlines and one for text copy. However, in the initial digitization, only the text design was chosen, and the ligatures and alternate characters were not included. The font family consists of 5 weights 4 for condensed , with complementary obliques for widest width fonts. When ITC released the OpenType version of the font, the original 33 alternate characters and ligatures, plus extra characters were included. Infobox font name style Sans serif image EurostileSpec.svg based on Microgramma releasedate 1962 creator Aldo Novarese foundry Nebiolo Printech Nebiolo foundries Mergenthaler Linotype Company Linotype , Unternehmensberatung Rubow Weber URW variations Microgramma br Microstyle sample The Eurostile typeface type font style is a geometric sans serif typeface designed by Aldo Novarese in 1962. Novarese originally made Eurostile for one of the best known Italian Type foundry foundries , Nebiolo Printech Nebiolo , in Turin . Novarese developed Eurostile because although the similar Microgramma , which he had also designed, came with a variety of weights, it had only Capital letter upper case letters. A decade after he had designed Microgramma, Novarese remedied this flaw with his design of Eurostile, which added Lower case lower case letters, a bold condensed variant, and an ultra narrow design he called Eurostile Compact, for a total of seven fonts. Characteristics Eurostile is a popular display font. Its linear nature suggests modern architecture , with an appeal both technical and functional. The squarish shapes with their rounded corners evoke the appearance of television screens of the 1950s and 1960s. As such, it has found some popularity in contemporary graphic design , as well as in science fiction novel and film artwork. Foundry Type Introduced by Nebiolo Printech Nebiolo in 1962.
