  1. Computer file management

Unreferenced date December 2009 The term computer file management refers to the manipulation of document s and data in Computer file file s on a computer . Specifically, one may create a new file or edit an existing file and save it open or load a pre existing file into memory or close a file without saving it. Additionally, one may group related files in directories . These tasks are accomplished in different ways in different operating system s and depend on the user interface design and, to some extent, the Computer storage storage medium being used. Concept of the hierarchy of files Files can also be managed based on their location on a storage device. They are stored in a storage medium in Binary file binary form. Physically, the data is placed in a not so well organized structure, due to fragmentation computer fragmentation . However, the grouping of files into directories for operating systems such as DOS , Unix , Linux or folders for the Mac OS and Microsoft Windows Windows is done by changing an index of file information known as the File Allocation Table NTFS for recent versions of Windows or Master File Table depending on operating system used . In this index, the physical location of a particular file on the storage medium is stored, as well as its position in the hierarchy of directories as we see it using commands such as DIR, LS and programs such as Explorer, Finder . The basic idea of NFM is that the rapid, ongoing growth of file data capacity on enterprise networks has led to massive management complexity and accelerating operating costs. NFM is the concept of creating a virtualization layer between the clients and the file servers or network attached storage NAS devices . By creating this abstraction layer, System Administrators may simplify the management of the tens, hundreds or even thousands of devices and terabytes of storage resources on their networks. NFM enables the non disruptive movement of data between servers, preserving the client access path pathname , policies for automating the placement of data according to its changing needs, and the ability to discover, analyze and report on server and file usage. Standards NFM, NAS virtualizataion and file virtualization interacts with heterogeneous servers using the Common Internet File System CIFS and the Network File System protocol Network File System NFS . 1. Self-management (computer science)

Self Management is the process by which computer systems shall manage their own operation without human intervention. Self Management technologies are expected to pervade the next generation of network management systems. The growing complexity of modern networked computer systems is currently the biggest limiting factor in their expansion. The increasing heterogeneity of big corporate computer systems, the inclusion of mobile computing devices, and the combination of different networking technologies like Wireless LAN WLAN , cellular phone networks, and mobile ad hoc networks make the conventional, manual management very difficult, time consuming, and error prone. Currently, the most important industrial initiative towards realizing self management is the Autonomic Computing Initiative ACI started by IBM in 2001. The ACI defines the following four functional areas Self Configuration Automatic configuration of components Self Healing Automatic discovery, and correction of faults automatically applying all necessary actions to bring system back to normal operation ref S Cube Knowledge Model http www.s cube network.eu km terms s self healing system Self Healing System ref Self Optimization Automatic monitoring and control of resources to ensure the optimal functioning with respect to the defined requirements Self Protection Proactive identification and protection from arbitrary attacks. The design complexity of Autonomic Systems and self management systems can be simplified by utilizing design patterns such as the Model View Controller MVC to improve concern separation by helping encapsulate functional concerns. ref E. 1. File copying

Unreferenced stub auto yes date December 2009 In the realm of computer file management, file copying is the creation of a new computer file file which has the same content as an existing file. All computer operating system s include file copying provisions in the user interface, like the command, cp Unix cp in Unix and copy command copy in MS DOS operating systems with a graphical user interface , or GUI , usually provide copy and paste or drag and drop methods of file copying.  File manager applications, too, provide an easy way of copying files. Internally, however, while some systems have specialized Application programming interface application programming interfaces API s for copying files like CopyFile and CopyFileEx in Windows API , others like Unix and MS DOS fall back to simply reading the contents of the old file and writing it to the new file. This makes little difference with local files those on the computer s hard drive , but provides an interesting situation when both the source and target files are located on a remote file server .  Operating systems with specialized file copying APIs are usually able to tell the server to perform the copying locally, without sending file contents over the network, thus greatly improving performance.  Those systems that have no comparable APIs, however, have to read the file contents over the network, and then send them back again, over the network.  Sometimes, remote file copying is performed with a specialized command, like ncopy in MS DOS clients for Novell NetWare . An even more complicated situation arises when one needs to copy files between two remote servers.  The simple way is to read data from one server, and then to write the data to the second server.  See also Soft copy Hard copy DEFAULTSORT File Copying Category Computer file systems Category Copyright law Operating system stub ko kk ...   more details

  1. Stub file

A stub file is a computer file which appears to the user to be on disk storage disk and immediately available for use but in fact some or all of the data of the file is being held on a different storage medium. When a stub file is accessed device driver software intercepts the access, retrieves the data from its actual location and writes it to the file, and then allows the user s access to proceed. Typically the user is unaware that the file s data was being stored on a different medium although they may experience a slight delay when accessing such a file. ref http encyclopedia2.thefreedictionary.com stub file ref File stubbing, the act of creating stub files, is a Hierarchical storage management HSM concept. Purpose The usual purpose of stubbing files is to move data from an expensive high speed storage device such as a computer s hard drive to lower cost storage such as a magnetic tape, or an electro optical disk, while not requiring users to know how to use specialised storage software to retrieve the data. It also allows a system administrator system manager to enforce the use of low cost storage when users would prefer to store their files on the highest availability, and highest cost, media supplied. ref http encyclopedia2.thefreedictionary.com HSM ref Availability Stubbing is a feature of many commercial file backup and archiving packages and is available for Microsoft Windows , Novell NetWare , Linux and other operating systems. 1. Parity file

Parity files are Computer file file s that are created to accompany data files, and are used to preserve data integrity and assist in data recovery . They are useful when data files are transmitted or stored on less than perfect media such as newsgroup messages, Satellite broadcasting satellite transmission , or optical disk . Parity files are constructed according to algorithms of error detection and correction . Overview First, one or more data files are analyzed and a group of parity files are built that record the structure of the files to be protected. Later, if any of the protected files are lost, the parity files can be used to re create the missing files. Even if one or more of the parity files are missing, the remainder of the set can still rebuild missing original files, if there is enough of the backup present. If too many files are missing, the parity files will not have enough base data to work with. Parity A parity bit parity is the difference within a set of binary code. the parity of 1 0 is 1, 0 0 is 0 and 0 1 is 1, therefore lost data can be rebuilt based on the parity of a set of code. 1. Farley File

Unreferenced stub auto yes date December 2009 A farley file is a set of records kept by politicians on people they have met previously. The term is named for James Farley James Aloysius Farley , who was Franklin Delano Roosevelt Franklin Delano Roosevelt s campaign manager. Farley, who went on to become the chairman of the Democratic National Committee and a United States Postmaster General Postmaster General , kept a file on everyone he ever met, and who ever met Roosevelt. Whenever people were scheduled to meet again with Roosevelt, Farley would review their files, allowing Roosevelt to meet them again knowing their spouse, their children s names and ages anything which had come out of earlier meetings, and any other intelligence Farley added to the file. The effect was powerful and intimate. Such farley files are now commonly kept by other politicians and businesspeople. The Farley File figures prominently in the Robert A. Heinlein novel, Double Star , in which an actor impersonates a major political figure. He is able to extend the impersonation into personal encounters by use of the politician s Farley File. The employment of the Farley File may be compared with the ancient Roman use of a Nomenclator nomenclature nomenclator , a slave who attended his master during canvassing and on similar occasions, for the purpose of telling him the names of those he met in the street see Lewis & Short, A Latin Dictionary, s.v. nomenclator. Cicero, Ad Atticum 4,1,5 and Pro Murena XXXVI 77 . It might be of interest to dovetail the idea of a Farley File with the idea of Six Degrees of Separation.
