  1. Computer-supported telecommunications applications

Computer supported telecommunications applications CSTA is an abstraction layer for telecommunications applications. It is independent of underlying protocol computing protocols . It has a telephone device model that enables Computer telephony integration CTI applications to work with a wide range of telephone devices. Originally developed in 1992, it has continued to be developed and refined over the years. It is often the model that most CTI applications are built on and claim compliance with. It became an Open Systems Interconnection OSI standard in July 2000. It is currently being maintained by ECMA International . The core of CSTA is a normalized Call Control model. Additional to the core there are Call Associated features and Physical Device features amongst others. An implementation of the standard need not provide all features, and so Profiles are provided. For example, the Basic Telephony profile provides such features as Make Call, Answer and Clear Connection. History CSTA has seen 3 major revisions to date. Phase 1 1992 Phase 2 1994 Phase 3 1998 Recent developments Phase 3 of the CSTA standard saw the introduction of uaCSTA, CSTA XML and CSTA Object Model extensions. These extensions are in various states of completion but all extend the scope of CSTA. Example of Underlying Protocols Protocols that may be used by CSTA. The Educational assessment assessment tools utilized in computer supported collaborative learning settings are used to measure groups knowledge of the collaborative processes, the quality of groups products and individuals collaborative learning skills. Perspective Traditional assessment is equated with individualized exams and evaluations. However, in online collaborative learning, assessment requires a broader perspective as it encompasses the collaborative interactions using asynchronous and Synchronization synchronous communications between group members. Assessment has been found to have a significant effect on CSCL by motivating learners through accountability and constructive feedback. 1. History of automated adaptive instruction in computer applications

Within the field of human computer interaction there has long been interest in developing adaptive automated instruction software to facilitate learning of application programs. This software would monitor a computer user s behavior while he or she uses the application program, and then provide optimized and personalized instruction to help the user become more skilled with the application. This form of instruction could be performed by a stand alone tutoring application, or it could be carried out by special routines built into the application program itself as with the Microsoft Office Assistant discussed below . Note that the history of adaptive learning approaches to education in general, some of which is summarized in the Wikipedia articles on spaced repetition and electronic learning , lies beyond the scope of this entry. Chronology of developments in the field A variety of different strategies for automated instruction in computer applications have been discussed and tried over a period of at least 25 years, although at present the technology does not appear to enjoy very wide application.
