  1. PRISM (chipset)

PRISM wireless networking solutions are a family of Conexant chipset s used for Wireless LAN s, and were formerly produced by Intersil Intersil Corporation . Legacy 802.11b products Prism 2 2.5 3 The open source HostAP driver supports the IEEE 802.11 802.11b IEEE 802.11b Prism 2 2.5 3 family of chips. Wireless adaptors which use the Prism chipset are known for compatibility, and are preferred for specialist applications such as packet capture. No win64 drivers are known to exist. Intersil firmware Wired Equivalent Privacy WEP WPA Temporal Key Integrity Protocol TKIP , after update WPA2 CCMP , after update Lucent Agere WEP WPA TKIP in hardware 802.11b g products Prism54, ISL38xx The chipset has undergone a major redesign for 802.11g compatibility and cost reduction, and newer Prism54 chipsets are not compatible with their predecessors. Intersil initially provided a Linux driver for the first Prism54 chips which implemented a large part of the 802.11 stack in the firmware. However, further cost reductions caused a new, lighter firmware to be designed and the amount of on chip memory to shrink, making it impossible to run the older version of the firmware on the latest chips. In the meantime, the PRISM business was sold to Conexant, which never published information about the newer firmware API that would enable a Linux driver to be written. However, a reverse engineering effort eventually made it possible to use the new Prism54 chipsets under the Linux and BSD operating systems. 1. NoWires Needed

Orphan date February 2009 NoWires Needed was a Netherlands Dutch company specializing in IEEE 802.11 wireless Wireless LAN WLAN technology. It was founded in Bilthoven , in the Netherlands in 1994 . The first product was the Parrot 550 wireless access point . This was followed by the Parrot 1100 WAP with 11 Mbit s capacity and 802.11b and Wi Fi compatibility. The product line also included wireless network interface s. All of these used the Intersil PRISM chipset PRISM WLAN chipset . The Parrot 1100 was also sold by Compaq as the WL400 access point. This access point was not intended to be sold to consumers, but rather to businesses. This model included an extra long, heavy duty power cable and the ability to be wall mounted. Federal Communications Commission FCC rules require that WLAN hardware available to consumers use non standard antenna connectors. The WL400 however uses standard SMA connector s for its antennas. In 2000 the company was sold to Intersil. In August 2003 Intersil sold off their Wireless product group to GlobespanVirata . In March 2004 GlobespanVirata merged with Conexant Conexant Systems . 1. IVTV

Multiple issues orphan December 2009 notability January 2011 refimprove January 2011 Portal Free software IVTV is a driver for Linux Unix systems to allow them to use certain video capture cards that make use of on board MPEG 1 MPEG 2 encoder s. What is IVTV? The http ivtvdriver.org IVTV project started in early 2003 with the primary goal of providing a Linux Open Source driver for series of Conexant based TV cards. The project is developing a Clean room design clean room driver for cards based on the iCompression iTVC15 or Conexant CX23415 CX23416 MPEG codec. A clean room implementation is needed as Conexant will only release the data sheet for the iTVC codec under a Non disclosure agreement . Examples of such cards are the Hauppauge PVR 250 350 series of MPEG video capture cards, the Hauppauge freestyle and the AVerMedia M179 AVerTV. The M179 uses a Sony SBX1637 audio module which is not supported by the current driver so while you can capture video, you get no audio yet. The freestyle hasn t been tested, but it should work, or at least be easy to get working. ref http ivtv.sourceforge.net FAQ.html jump01 ref At its current state, many iTVC based cards are usable with this driver, and work continues to remove bugs, support more cards and to develop towards V4L2 compliance. Development The IVTV drivers are in constant development, and like in many open source projects there is a stable unstable release system. Some cards are only supported by the unstable drivers, and often only with a particular unstable version. Current development source can be found http ivtvdriver.org trac here . 1. Super G (wireless networking)

Super G is Atheros proprietary frame bursting , data compression compression , and channel bonding technology to improve IEEE 802.11g wireless LAN performance. The throughput bit rate transmission speed limit when using Super G is claimed to be up to 40  megabit per second Mbit s 60  Mbit s at a 108  Mbit s data signaling rate signaling rate , which is achieved through the bonding of two 54  Mbit s 802.11g channels. Other vendors have marketed Super G products as 108G Technology, 108  Mbit s 802.11g, and Xtreme G. Manufacturers that have licensed Super G technology from Atheros include Airlink 101 , Clipsal , D Link , Intelbras , Netgear , Nortel Networks , Planex , SMC , Sony , TRENDnet , SparkLAN , Toshiba and ZyXEL . In general, Super G products from different vendors are all interoperability interoperable in Super G mode. Non standard channel bonding extensions to 802.11g such as Super G, have been criticized for creating interference communication interference on all Wi Fi channels, potentially causing issues with other wireless devices that use the band radio band , such as neighboring wireless network s, cordless telephone s, baby monitor s, and Bluetooth devices. However, Atheros claims that in real world scenarios with physical separation and walls, closely located networks will not experience any interference from a Super G network. Super G is one of several competing proprietary approaches that were developed to increase performance of 802.11g wireless devices, such as 125 High Speed Mode from Broadcom , Multiple input multiple output communications MIMO based extensions from Airgo Networks , and Nitro wireless networking Nitro from Conexant . Unreferenced date December 2006 Nitro from Conexant originally developed by Intersil is a proprietary IEEE 802.11 802.11g 802.11g performance enhancement technology introduced in 2003 as part of the PRISM chipset PRISM chipset . The first implementation was designed to help compensate for the performance loss of higher speed 802.11g devices when they share a wireless LAN wireless network with slower IEEE 802.11 802.11b 802.11b devices. Later implementations are marketed as Nitro MX Xtreme which adds proprietary data frame frame burst mode computing bursting , data compression compression and Point to point communication telecommunications point to point side session technology for a claimed 140 Mbit s throughput bit rate transmission speed . The point to point side session technology is called DirectLink, which creates a connection between clients or from a client to a media source, such as a media server, and avoids the Wireless access point access point . It does this while staying in 802.11 Infrastructure mode so the client can continue to utilize access point based security and power savings. Nitro is one of several competing proprietary approaches that were developed to increase 802.11g performance in wireless devices, such as 125 High Speed Mode from Broadcom , Multiple input multiple output communications MIMO based extensions from Airgo Networks , and Super G wireless networking Super G from Atheros .
