The earliest cong were produced by the Liangzhu culture 3400 BC 3400 2250 BC later examples date mainly from the Shang Dynasty Shang and Zhou Dynasty Zhou dynasties. In form, a cong is a tube with a circular inner section and squarish outer section. The outer surface is divided vertically or horizontally such that the whole defines a hollow cylinder embedded in a partial rectangular block. Proportions vary a cong may be squat or taller than it is wide. The outer faces are sometimes decorated with masklike faces, which may be related to the taotie designs found on later bronze vessels. Although generally considered to be a ritual object of some sort, the original function and meaning of the cong are unknown. Later writings speak of the cong as symbolizing the earth, while the bi jade bi represents the heavens. The square represents the earth and a circle represents the heavens. The Cong Burn is a small river in County Durham , England . It has its origin in a number of streams, among them Wheatley Green Burn, that rise on the southern and eastern slopes of Wheatley Hill, north of the village of Burnhope , and other streams, principally Whiteside Burn, that have their source on the southern slopes of Wheatley Hill and the northern slopes of Taylor s Hill, just east of Burnhope. These streams come together in the vicinity of West Edmondsley to form the Cong Burn, which flows in a broadly easterly or northeasterly direction, around the northern flank of Waldridge Fell and the western edge of Chester le Street , before flowing through the town to join the River Wear immediately east of the town.
