Pier Leoni or Pierleone lang la Petrus Leo or Petrus filius Leonis died 2 June 1128 was the son of the Converso Jewish convert Leo de Benedicto and founder of the great and important medieval Roman family of the Pierleoni family Pierleoni . He was called the Jewish Crassus by Gregorovius . Pierleone himself was a consul of Rome the eternal city in the early twelfth century. He was one of the regent s of the city itself when Pope Paschal II left in 1108 to deal with raising troops. Rome remained the pit of daily rebellion, as Gregorovius says. In 1111, Pierleone negotiated the imperial coronation of the Emperor Henry V . Ever a faithful ally of the pope, in 1117, he retook Rome for him, but was subsequently holed up in his tower by Ptolemy I of Tusculum . After the election of Bishop John of Gaeta as Gelasius II on 24 January 1118, the new pope was thrown into prison by Cencio II Frangipane . It was Pierleone, with his son Peter, Peter the prefect of the city, and the papal gonfalonier Stephen the Norman , who restored the pope s freedom. Pierleone held the Theatre of Marcellus , Tiber Island , and the Castel Sant Angelo , fortress of the popes. He was the greatest man in Rome in his time, the grandson of a Jew of Trastevere . His large marble sarcophagus is preserved in the Basilica of Saint Paul Outside the Walls . Its inscription reads, a man without an equal, immeasurably rich in money and children. Of these children, he left four sons Leo, Peter later Antipope Anacletus II , Giordano Pierleoni Jordan later Patrician post Roman Europe Patrician of the Commune of Rome , Roger, and Huguizon. distinguish Isaac La Peyr re Isaac Arthur Pereyre 1863 1934 was a Jewish activist in Bayonne in Southern France , and a commandant in the French army. Although his Hebrew name was Isaac , he seems to have been known as Arthur in the secular world. He was married to Rebecca Marguerite Pereyre, n e Leon 1873 1968 . The main accomplishment for which Pereyre is remembered by history is his writing out phonetically, according to modern French phonetics, the transliteration of the Mahzor holiday prayerbook of the Jewish community of Bayonne and Bordeaux. He wrote out this transliteration for the benefit of his wife, in the early years of the twentieth century. The Jewish communities of Bayonne and Bordeaux were founded by ex Marrano conversos , Sephardi Jews who had pretended to convert to Catholicism, yet secretly continued keeping their Jewish traditions. The communities had a special way of pronouncing Hebrew. Although the synagogues still exist today, they have been taken over by North African Jews. The old ex converso community is no more. Thus, Pereyre s transliteration is invaluable in teaching linguists what how the Hebrew pronunciation of the old community sounded. Prof. Moshe Bar Asher wrote a two volume study of the pronunciation as reflected in Pereyre s transliterated Mahzor, and published this study in 2006. Sources Bar Asher, Moshe. . Mosad Bialik, 2006.
