  1. Warren (domestic)

A domestic warren is an artificial, enclosed establishment of animal husbandry dedicated to the raising of European Rabbit rabbits for meat and fur. It evolved from the Anglo Norman concept of free warren , which had been, essentially, the equivalent of a hunting license for a given woodland . Architecture of the domestic warren The cunicularia of the monasteries may have more closely resembled hutch es or pens, than the open enclosures with specialized structures which the domestic warren eventually became. Such an enclosure or close was called a cony garth , or sometimes conegar , coneygree or bury from burrow . Moat and pale To keep the rabbits from escaping, domestic warrens were usually provided with a fairly substantive moat , or ditch filled with water. Rabbits generally do not swim and avoid water. A wikt pale pale , or fence, was provided to exclude predators. Pillow mounds pillow mounds redirects here The most characteristic structure of the cony garth rabbit yard ref English Garth small, enclosed plot is from Old Norse gar r yard, courtyard, fence . ref is the pillow mound . These were pillow like , oblong mounds with flat tops, frequently described as being cigar shaped , and sometimes arranged like the letter E or into more extensive, interconnected rows. Often these were provided with pre built, stone lined tunnels. The preferred orientation was on a gentle slope, with the arms extending downhill, to facilitate drainage. The soil needed to be soft, to accommodate further burrowing. See http www.hobbyhorsefestival.co.uk Hunting History.html Schematic diagram of a pillow mound . This type of architecture and animal husbandry has become obsolete, but numerous pillow mounds are still to be found in United Kingdom Britain , some of them maintained by English Heritage . 1. Rabbit hair

Rabbit hair also called rabbit fur , cony , comb , coney or lapin is the fur of the common rabbit . It is most commonly used in the making of fur hats and coats, and is considered quite valuable. The hair of a rabbit can be divided into three types guide hairs external hairs, long and rough guard hairs also called barbes four guard hairs surround each guide hair, sealing the coat down there are around sixty down hairs for each guide hair they are very short and barely visible, and serve to insulate the rabbit. File Rabbit fur.jpg thumb Rabbit fur clearly showing the different hairs. A selective breeding selectively bred rabbit from the 1900s, the Castor Rex , has guard hairs of the same length as the down, but this is atypical. Rabbit hair is commonly considered a byproduct of the ordinary process of breeding rabbits for meat, and as such is manufactured in vast quantities in England and France more than seventy million Fur pelt s a year in France alone. ref http www.fao.org docrep x5082e X5082E0h.htm 1 ref However, the quality of fur from these rabbits tends to be low, as the rabbits are slaughtered before reaching twelve weeks old and still have the infant coat. In temperate climates, the highest quality furs are obtained in winter from rabbits over five months old, when the thickness of the fur is even at other times of year, varying degrees of hair shedding causes uneven patches in the fur. The coat is also at its thickest at this time of year. The highest quality pelts are suitable for clothing , and typically constitute less than half of all pelts collected.
