  1. Ravenna Cosmography

File Karte Ravennat.jpg thumb right Map based on Ravenna Cosmography The Ravenna Cosmography was compiled by an anonymous cleric in Ravenna around AD 700. It consists of a list of place names covering the world from India to Ireland . Textual evidence indicates that the author frequently used maps as his source. The surviving texts are quite challenging. The three manuscript copies are distanced from the autograph original manuscript by three or four generations. As a result, the copies are plagued by errors of spelling, word division, omission, and errors of hearing The text was apparently dictated at one point. . The text to text variations are not limited to the place names, but are also significant in the intervening commentary. Thus, the bulk of the blame cannot be placed on the original author. The most recent critical edition of the three manuscripts is that of Joseph Schnetz, Itineraria Romana, vol. II Ravennatis Anonymi Cosmographia et Guidonis Geographica , 1942 reprinted 1990 , B G Teubner, Stuttgart. The obvious resemblance with D rer s Rhinoceros is quite clear. From Dr. Nuno Carvalho de Sousa Private Collections Lisbon David Kandel 1520 1592 was a Renaissance artist. One of the best qualities of the Renaissance period was its everlasting concern with the elements of the natural world. David Kandel was one of the pioneers of botanical art and science. However, very few facts are verifiable regarding his personal life, because very few events in his life are identifiable from surviving records. Biography He was probably born in Strasbourg , in 1520. He married in 1554 and 33 years later, in 1587, he was named owner of a house . David Kandel died in 1592. His works and woodcuts are varied, from scientific botanical illustrations to illustrations from chapters or scenes from the Holy Bible. The Kreuterbuch or The Book of the Herbs , by Hieronymus Bock , is a superb achievement full of beautiful woodcuts that were seen as the best of botanical art for the next two centuries. David Kandel contributed with 550 woodcuts to this masterpiece. These original woodcuts examined in great detail an enormous number of plants, herbs and trees by combining drawing, contemporary researches and medieval and ancient theories. The woodcut Rhinoceros , for the work Cosmographia or Cosmography by Sebastian Munster is, along with his maps, also very famous and depicts a rhinoceros truly based on the D rer sketch. 1. Rui Faleiro

Unreferenced date June 2011 Rui Ruy Faleiro was a Portuguese cosmography cosmographer , astrology astrologer , and astronomy astronomer who was the principal scientific organizer behind Ferdinand Magellan Magellan s circumnavigation of the world. Born in Covilh , Kingdom of Portugal , at the end of the fifteenth century, Faleiro and his brother Francisco Faleiro , also a cosmographer, served the Spain Spanish king Charles V, Holy Roman Emperor Charles I in Seville . Faleiro, one of the first to apply the most rigorously scientific method of determining latitude and longitude , had earlier served John II of Portugal and his successor, Manuel I of Portugal . Faleiro was certain that south of the Terras de Vera Cruz i.e. Brazil , at 40th parallel south 40 degrees latitude , there was an Atlantic passage that led to the Pacific Ocean South Seas . The sought after Maluku Islands Spice Islands would, by Faleiro s calculations, fall on the Spanish side of the Treaty of Tordesillas line of Tordesillas . The merchant Christopher de Haro helped Faleiro and Magellan present their proposal before the Spanish royal counselors. Faleiro planned to accompany Magellan on his voyage around the world. However, it is said that on the evening prior to embarkation, Faleiro worked out his own horoscope for the voyage. The stars predicted a violent death. Consequently, he remained behind. Other sources claim he went lunacy mad before the voyage, and thus did not join the expedition. 1. Neapolis, Sardinia

Neapolis was a common name of ancient cities, for others see Neapoli Neapolis Greek language Greek lang grc lang sc Nabui meaning New City , was an ancient city of Sardinia , and apparently one of the most considerable places on that island. It was situated on the west coast, at the southern extremity of the Gulf of Oristano , at the present day localit of Santa Maria di Nabui, in the comune of Guspini , Province of Medio Campidano . The Antonine Itinerary Itineraries place Neapolis 60 miles from Sulci in modern Sant Antioco , and 18 from Othoca modern Santa Giusta near Oristano . Itin. Ant. p. 84. The name would clearly seem to point to a ancient Greece Greek origin, but we have no account of its foundation or history. It is noticed by Pliny the Elder Pliny as one of the most important towns in Sardinia and its name is found also in Ptolemy and the Itineraries. Plin. iii. 7. s. 13 Ptol. iii. 3. 2 Itin. Ant. l. c. Tabula Peutingeriana Tab. Peut. Ravenna Cosmography Geogr. Rav. v. 26. Its ruins are still visible at the mouth of the river Pabillonis, where that stream forms a great estuary or lagoon, called the Stagno di Marceddi , and present considerable remains of ancient buildings as well as the vestiges of a Roman road and aqueduct. The spot is marked by an ancient church called Santa Maria di Nabui. De la Marmora, Voy. en Sardaigne , vol. ii. p. 357. The Aquae Neapolitanae mentioned by Ptolemy as well as in the Itinerary, which places them at a considerable distance inland, on the road from Othoca to Caralis modern Cagliari , are certainly the mineral sources now known as the Bagni di Sardara , on the high road from Cagliari to Oristano. Itin. Ant. p. 82 Ptol. iii. 3. 7 Geogr. Rav. v. 26 De la Marmora, l. c. p. 406.
