French literature small Le Chastelain de Couci modern orthography Le Ch telain de Coucy was a France French trouv res trouv re of the 12th century. He may have been the Guy de Couci who was castellan of Ch teau de Coucy from 1186 to 1203. Some twenty six songs are attributed to him, and about fifteen or sixteen are considered authentic. They are modelled very closely on Provence Provencal originals, but are saved from the category of mere imitations by a grace and simplicity peculiar to the author. The legend of the love of the Ch telain de Coucy and the Lady of Fayel, in which there figures a jealous husband who makes his wife eat the heart of her lover, has no historical basis, and dates from a late 13th century romance by Jakemon Sakesep . The story, which seems to be Breton in origin, has been also told of a Provencal troubadour, Guilhem de Cabestaing , and of the minnesinger Reinmar von Brennenberg . Pierre de Belloy dramatist Pierre de Belloy , who wrote some account of the family of Couci, made the story the subject of his tragedy Gabrielle de Vergy . The Disputation of Paris took place in 1240 in the court of the reigning king of France, Louis IX of France Louis IX St. Louis . The disputation had four rabbis defending the Talmud against the accusations of a Franciscan Order member. Disputers Nicholas Donin represented the Christian side of the debate and four of the most distinguished rabbis of France, Yechiel of Paris , Moses ben Jacob of Coucy Moses of Coucy , Judah of Melun , and Samuel ben Solomon of Ch teau Thierry , represented the Jewish side of the debate. Donin was a member of the Franciscan Order and a Jewish convert to Christianity. He had persuaded Pope Gregory IX to issue a bill ordering the burning of the Talmud. Terms The terms of the disputation demanded that the four rabbis defend the Talmud against Donin s accusations that the Talmud was immoral, blasphemous, and spoke offensively of Jesus. Though the rabbis presented a defense of the Talmud, a commission of Christian theologians condemned the Talmud to be burned and on June 17, 1244. Twenty four carriage loads of Jewish religious manuscripts were set on fire in the streets of Paris. ref cite book title The history of the Talmud, from the time of its formation, about 200 B.
