Hearing loss is often secondary to absent, small, or unusually formed ears microtia , and commonly results from malformations of the middle ear . Researchers have found that most patients with Treacher Collins syndrome have symmetric external ear canal abnormalities and symmetrically dysmorphic or absent ossicles in the middle ear space. Patients with Treacher Collins syndrome exhibit hearing losses similar to those of patients with malformed or missing ossicles Pron et al. , 1993 . Pierre Robin sequence main Pierre Robin syndrome Persons with Pierre Robin sequence PRS are at greater risk for hearing impairment than persons with cleft lip and or palate without PRS. Neuro cardio facial cutaneous syndromes NCFC , also referred to as neuro craniofacial cardiac syndromes is a group of developmental disorders with a genetic ground, affecting the nervous system, circulatory system, cranio facial and cutaneous development. These four parts are the common denominator for the syndromes, but are mostly accompanied by disturbances in other parts of the body. The two most common syndromes under this umbrella are Leopard syndrome LS and Noonan syndrome NS . Other members are Costello syndrome CS , cardio facio cutaneous syndrome CFC and Neurofibromatosis type I NF1 . Recently, it has been observed that NCFC syndromes result from de novo germline mutations that alter the Ras Raf Mek signal transduction pathway. ref http www.jci.org articles view 34385 ref These are called RASopathy RASopathies . 1 percent of autistic children have either a loss or duplication in a region of Chromosome 16 that encompasses the gene for Extracellular signal regulated kinases ERK 1 .
